@bebadefabo It's nice that they allow a "free pass," even if it's only for a limited number of shares. What I'd really like to see is the ability to pay per article, or even to buy access on a per issue basis, rather than making a year-long commitment.

Activating new credit card - wondering how many subscriptions I've forgotten to update. Although used the occasion to sign up to a service with the old card first to prevent possible erroneous reoccurring payment problems as well :D
I usually have pretty good overview of payments but now it can provide a chance to cancel unused subs if I've missed some.

I've been canceling monthly subscriptions for three main reasons.
One, they're costing too much money (prices keep going up). Two, I can get a lot of the same services for free from my library (borrow movies, auidobooks, etc), and three, I'd rather touch grass before the world ends.

This is how it should be, this keeps incentive to improve the software (copied comment from asimons04 on arstechnica):
Back in my day, "lifetime subscription" was just called buying the software. A simple transaction, one and done.
Not always, but often, you would get free minor updates until the next major version. e.g. If you bought version 6.1, you would generally get the 6.2, 6.3, etc updates at no cost. When they release version 7, you could either stick with the latest 6.x version as long as you wanted or pay to upgrade to 7. Again, not always, but often, the cost to upgrade from a lower version to a current one was significantly less than buying the newest version outright.
The point is, software companies did fine for decades under that model. Having to maintain a subscription for software you run yourself is a relatively recent enshittification in the industry. Once an always-on internet connection became the expected norm, they decided to turn that into a chain. #software #subscriptions #enshittification
