@kixes I'm still COVID, though I tend to be conservative in matters of style (and not a fan of Guardian style and others that spell acronyms with sentence case).

Today’s #SubEditing pedantry: do we like COVID or Covid…

God, I wish I could train writers, particularly journalists, out of misusing ‘despite’ when ‘although’ is the word they want!!
From a Graun article today:
“Despite there being several hundred languages spoken in Australia, 2021 census data showed that 77.3% of Australians only spoke English at home.”
See how the author is contorting the verb into a fake gerund (the noun form of a verb) because they intuitively know that ‘despite’ is a preposition and prepositions are used with nouns?
The ‘there is’ construction (I have forgotten its grammatical name) also requires only a noun as it shows the action of existence: “There is milk in the fridge.”
No need for any of that here because we have another verb, ‘speak’: here framed passively to emphasise the languages.
The sentence is much more direct and natural when we replace the grammatically incorrect preposition ‘despite’ with the conjunction ‘although’:
“Although several hundred languages are spoken in Australia, 2021 census data showed that 77.3% of Australians only spoke English at home.”
