  1. Attempted murder on the Waterloo express? : 1971 : Bagshot railway station
Kapow! There was an explosion. Before I even grasped what had just happened, I could see I was covered with shards of glass. What was that noise? The train window I was sat next to had suddenly vanished and was in pieces on me and the seat. Luckily, I had not been looking towards the window... [continues]

  2. You can’t tell me what I’m doing wrong… : 1976 : And Mother Makes Four, Camberley

“Why are you choosing a university so far away?” aunt Sheila demanded of me. “You should commute from home to Guildford so you can help your mum.”

I was seething. It was the first time we had spoken in years and THIS was her ‘advice’ to me? How dare she! It was three years since my middle-aged... [continues]

  3. We are lucky to have a weekly #farmersMarket just a few blocks away, allowing fresh, local produce & goods at a walkable location. It runs every sunday from June to October. It's a hit, bring people from all over town.

The closest grocery store is a 45+ minute walk each way, and crosses and follows treacherous highways and #strodes.

The #QSFM transforms an entire city block - the park known as #QueensSquare (shaped like the union jack - the British flag) into a festive market.

Tents and stalls, food trucks, fine arts, coffee & caramel kettle corn. Over a dozen nationalities offer a taste of home to the local Jamaican, Syrian, Lebanese, Chinese, Turkish, Afghani, Korean, Vietnamese and Africans who now call this place home.

A new generation of farmers carries the torch from the previous, delivering locally grown produce that beats the big grocers out of the water in terms of quality and value.

Being disabled and without a vehicle, I am in a similar predicament to many of my neighbours.

Wouldn't it be wild to have access to healthy, local food all year 'round? Let's give the residents a place to sell their produce and cooking, without the humiliation of fighting the big chains. Wouldn't it transform the lives of all involved?

I propose we build a permeant location for the farmers market, a block east of Queens Square, on the former site of the last grocer in the South End - the Save Ez that closed in the early 90s.

The QSFM was founded by a friend of mine. One guy, with a lot of help from many other people, built this out of nothing. It's been running strong for at least 10 years.

People can make a difference. People can start things. People can change the course of their entire neighbourhood.

    Let's do it.

  4. An elite academy for aspiring rent-a-gob politicians : 1976 : Durham Union Society

“I’m sorry but you must wear appropriate attire to attend,” the usher told me sternly.

I thought I had been dressed normally enough, but apparently not. I was waving my club membership card, having paid the annual subscription during Freshers’ Week. Only then did I learn that it was insufficient merely... [continues]
