Another reference to #dovecot #wormhole found:
@francis blogged about his #stalwart evaluation and why he then decided against moving to Stalwart but rather to stay with Dovecot and use my wormhole plugin.

And all decided. #Stalwart, #PowerDNS (and PowerAdmin) and @beasts. Got the whole lot running in under a day. Works exactly as I wanted.

So, it seems to come down to a choice of two:
#mailcow - completely open source, but many many docker containers which I absolutely despise.
#stalwart - One binary, does everything, open source and Enterprise and sufficiently not US based to matter.
Tried setting each up. mailcow - took about an hour of fiddling, tweaking and double-checking DNS records. stalwart - took ten minutes and did the lot.
Even for the Enterprise version, the licence is ridiculously cheap ($2/mailbox/year).

Rien à installer sur Stalwart, c'est actif dès qu'un listener HTTP existe. Il a suffi d'autoriser les requêtes du navigateur. L'API n'est pas exposée sur internet, j'y accède par un tunnel SSH.

Pour tester, Claude Code m'a généré deux pages HTML en moins d'une minute, sans framework, ouvertes en local : une qui affiche le dernier mail reçu, une qui répond à son expéditeur.

Ça marche, le mail est parti.

Consulter et envoyer ses mails sans client classique, sans rien ajouter au serveur. Stalwart est très complet.

Just released c4k-mail for a one shot stalwart k9s installation.

We use this setup for provision a k9s combo of

* stalwart for mail,
* forgejo for website source & actions
* webserver for serving the website.

Works very well on a small hetzner server :-)

Sterna Mail just landed on F-Droid 🐦

A private, native Android email client for JMAP (and classic IMAP/SMTP). No ads, no tracking, no Google services.

Reproducible builds too, verified by F-Droid. It only took me three attempts to make two computers produce the exact same bytes, which I'm told is called "determinism".

@mwichary Server software I self-host, like #continuwuity, #gotosocial, #stalwart and #tailscale (amongst others) just keeps getting better for each release! And it’s also a joy to be in their respective matrix rooms and follow the development, and having the possibility to get support, suggest things and even contribute, is just awesome!

Finally got around to setting up #stalwart to self-host my #email. It was easy-ish to set up. Although I rather they document their install script so I didn't have to figure out the set up by reading it. The installation docs should also nudge people to use an SSH tunnel to access the localhost admin during setup.

I created a script for creating mail aliases in the terminal with one command in 2s or so.

I'm using #Stalwart for this, a Rust based server.

@meissa die Lösung dieser Frage ist recht einfach: #Stalwart "spricht" ja nicht nur #JMAP, sondern auch Klassik in Form von IMAP, CalDAV, CardDAV. SMTP sowieso. Und damit sind alle "alten" (Web-)Clients kompatibel.

Okay, setting up a #Stalwart server for email aggregation turned out to be a bigger, more frustrating task than setting up Matrix Synapse with bridges. But I've finally done it. I'll make a video about it some day.

@galaxis I'm running a #Stalwart server for some months now, also on a smaller scale as you want to do it, and I'm superhappy with it. Before of that I operated a small mail server with the "classic" setup (Postfix, Dovecot, Rspamd, Postgrey, ...) for more then 10 years. So I have some experience with mail server, also with bigger ones, and I do not want to go back. Stalwart is great!

Alles vor dem Upgrade zu sichern, alles, falls möglich auch einen Snapshot des #Stalwart-Servers zu machen, unterschreibe ich. Allerdings hat bei mir der Upgrade geklappt. Ich hab mein Vorgehen hier https://grupp-web.de/cms/2026/05/03/mein-stalwart-upgrade-von-version-0-15-5-auf-version-0-16-2/ dokumentiert.

Upgradeempfehlung für #Stalwart #Mail auf 0.16 (beschrieben unter https://github.com/stalwartlabs/stalwart/blob/main/UPGRADING/v0_16.md):

Fangt mit einer neuen Stalwart-Instanz an mit kompletter Neueinrichtung. Lasst dann parallel jeweils einen IMAP-Listener beider Instanzen laufen und verschiebt die Ordnerstruktur mit den Mails in die neue Instanz. Pointet dann die Mailrecords auf die neue Instanz.

Es hat sich einfach zu viel zwischen 0.15 und 0.16 geändert. Die Config ist *kompett* anders. Die Einstellungen zu migrieren, zu sehen, dass immer wieder etwas fehlt, dann nicht ganz erfolgreich zurückzurollen hat mich den ganzen Tag gekostet. Einziges Opfer ist glücklicherweise nur die Struktur eigener Ordner.

Lesson Learned: Entgegen Migrationsanleitungen, sichert wirklich *alles was ihr könnt*. Die ganze Datenbank, Anwendungsordner, Binarys, Configs, **ALLES**. Fehlt Speicher, packt mehr rein, und schreibt darauf.

Snapshots sind keine Sicherungen. *Sichert* alles. Kann es nur betonen.

Seit dem Update von heute (v16.6) kennt #stalwart die #inwx API und kann sowohl die DNS Einträge selbständig setzen als auch DKIM Schlüssel automatisch rotieren.

Mit #desec hat dies leider bisher nicht zuverlässig funktioniert

I've tested what happens when the server is down (because outages do happen) and everything was delivered as expected

I was expecting web pages to be snappy and super fast, but there is still clearly some performance work to be done.

For the record, I am on a metered WiFi connection in the middle of the Appennine Mountains in Italy, which is honestly the best environment to battle-test web services and verify how lightweight and optimised they are.
