From the perspective of those of us trying to provide current information on this issue to the public, it's incredibly frustrating that *after* the Mayor scheduled this Special Meeting (on very short notice), he then proceeded to update the policy that is being discussed at the special meeting, just two business days before the public is supposed to provide comment (and the Council is supposed to vote).

It's the start of a heat wave in Greater #Boston today, and, at the top of a steep hill climb in #Somerville, some kind soul neighbor had set out a cooler of water beside the sidewalk.

(Incidentally, if you're walking from #CambridgeMA, to or through Spring Hill, I've found School St. is much more leisurely than Lowell St., for example. And you can get more affordable groceries at Market Basket on the way back.)

Somehow when P4B updated their methodology this year, Cambridge and Somerville specifically were massively negatively affected. I can confidently say that both cities have made biking improvements over the last year, so there is something else going on.

Up until now, Somerville's official 2026 conversations about #bodycamera policy for #Somerville have largely occurred in non-public executive sessions because the negotiations were tied to the police collective bargaining process, and we are now in budget season, which means that there's danger of the process being fast-tracked without properly public deliberation.

1) #bodycamera footage offers a distorted low quality view of what happened,
2) human memory is mutable so officers' memories of what happened may change to accommodate what they think they see in the footage, and
3) it gives the opportunity for an officer acting in bad faith to check what misrepresentations they can get away with.

But what I find most interesting is that I checked here to see if anyone had information and there were already a slew of posts. Most of them were just asking/ speculating what it was. But the fact that there was an almost instant local/regional discussion about it here shows this space works.

Always striking to see how multi-faceted some of the great scientists of the past were ( #Gauss, #Faraday, #Maxwell, #Newton, #Somerville, #Lovelace etc.). The boundaries between disciplines were much more fluid back then, and the same person could contribute to multiple fields, even though they might be remembered for only one today.

I think my biggest accomplishment was the “didn’t hurt myself.” I certainly did a lot of physical things that were impressive (for me, and my ability.) But just being able to continue to ‘dig deep’ for hours on end — that was great.

As usual, I want to avoid name-dropping. But we did this one neat turn-vault landing on one foot and continuing on to step down and off the wall… that was something very different! Also, one of the first times I’ve EVER just “done” something and actually felt like I was really moving simply.
