Speaking of Canada, I always feel annoyed by those who who dismiss it as "boring" or imagine it to be nothing more than " USA Lite".

Although I am aware that the influence of the USA weighs heavily on Canada, thinkers and artists have emerged from there whose work owes much to their Canadian background yet who are much more than mere provincial celebrities.

Charles Taylor, for example, has put forward arguments regarding culture and identity that need not command assent but that must not be ignored by the serious student of contemporary social and political thought.

To separate these arguments from Taylor's own history in Canada in general and Quebec in particular would be miss something important about his approach to culture and society .

Humans can't live alone. From an evolutionary and historical perspective, alone humans == dead humans, generally speaking.

It seems like a bootstraps-oriented society is asking people to succeed alone in order to be part of the group. Does that really make sense?
