Watch most TV shows these days, and, right in the middle of a suspenseful scene or critical moment, two characters will break off from the action to discuss some personal difference, emotional issue, or other characters in the show and their personal issues. This is not two characters "having a moment." That would be Spock and Kirk and their "the needs of the many" scene. This is lazy, expository writing to "tell" pathos rather than "show" it.
