https://github.com/pasky/pachi/releases
However pachi 12.90 reveals a weakness I didnot expect . It attacks on 13x13 groups by Invasion that was lost several times . A won game turned into lost almost at end game . 🧐

SmartGo One 2.8 drastically improves Hint: it now highlights bad moves, and lets you see the principal variation expected for each move (just tap to select the move bubble).
Joseki analysis now also shows a scrollable list of choices, not just top 3, a bug with sharing SGF files to SmartGo has been fixed, and more.

A SmartGo fan sent me a link to Jerry Pournelle’s article in 1985 BYTE magazine, fun reminder.
https://archive.org/details/byte-magazine-1985-12/page/n329/mode/2up
It was great to meet Jerry Pournelle on his tour of ETH Zürich and give him a demo of the Smart Go Board – more than 40 years ago!

I added sharing of books as EPUB to SmartGo One three weeks ago, only now getting around to posting about it:
-
Also new in Go Books: “Weird and Wonderful, vol. 2: Unusual Opening Patterns and Techniques through the Eyes of AI” by Kim Ouweleen. The first volume looked at extraordinary moves by professional go players; this second volume brings together a range of unusual opening patterns, tested against AI. Inside, you will find cherished techniques from the past that AI has overturned, alongside fresh innovations and rare variations now confirmed as sound.
-
New in Go Books: “Mastering Mini Go: A Complete Guide to the 9×9 Go Board” by Mark Tomlinson.
From the intro: “The 9×9 board distills Go to its essence—a knife fight in a phone booth where every move counts and games finish in minutes, not hours. Mastering Mini Go is your complete guide to this compact battlefield, transforming it from a beginner’s training ground into a sophisticated tactical arena.”
If you play any 9×9 go, this is a must-read.

Pro games collection updated to 134,497 games, adding almost 2,000 games. Would have been an even 134,500 except that there are three 21 × 21 games in GoGoD that SmartGo One can’t handle.
Really interesting opening in the most recent game of Ichiriki Ryo vs Shibano Toramaru (2025-10-01e), big trade in the lower left corner. Check it out.

Liquid Glass is coming to SmartGo One. Some of it is ready now, more to come.

“The 1971 Honinbo Tournament” chronicles Ishida’s first major triumph, analyzing his 7 games in the Honinbo league as well as his 6 games in the title match against Rin Kaiho. Every game is analyzed in great detail (327 figures, 460 diagrams). Written by James Davies based on the commentaries of Iwamoto Kaoru 9-dan; out of print for the last 10 years. Don’t let the “1971” scare you off, this book is still relevant and exciting.

Blog post on improvements in SmartGo One 2.5: a quick way to switch tabs, much improved game result editing, and reverse komi.

More than 1,300 pro go games added to SmartGo One, just in time for your studies before the US Go Congress. Total GoGoD game collection is now at 132,558.

Glad I managed to get a small feature update out on Monday before Apple gave developers a lot of Liquid Glass homework for the summer. On Mac and iPad, when using a trackpad or mouse to enter moves, a ghost stone appears on the board under the cursor (can be turned off in Settings > Move Input > Show Ghost Moves). I’ve just verified that this also works with the hover state of the Pencil on iPad.
-
SmartGo One users* will now see an additional thousand pro games in their collection, bringing the total to over 131,000. Also, the newest update adds Show Joseki* to the context menu when you tap and hold on a corner stone (that feature uses the game collection to figure out where the pros played).
* requires Pro subscription

The pro game collection in SmartGo One has been updated with over 2,000 new games, for a total of over 130,000 games. The names dictionary lists over 4,700 entries.
The increased number of games makes this old blog post on searching for pro games even more relevant:

SmartGo One 2.3.5 is mostly a bug fix update, but also adds a setting for showing the SGF circle property as a circle instead of a dot, a frequently requested change. It now defaults to circle on stones, dot on empty points (Settings > Board Display > Circle as Dot). You can also mark the most recent move with a circle, as you may be used to from some other apps (Settings > Board Display > Move Numbering, or just tap on the board with two fingers for quick view adjustments).

The most recent episode of the usually excellent “All Things Go” podcast features an interview with me. Still pretty good.

When you go to gobooks.com, you’ll also notice a new book: “Mastering Basic Corner Shapes” by Young Sun Yoon. Available on the web, still waiting for Apple’s approval on the App Store. More about that when it’s approved.
