  1. Small Prophets is a whimsical delight, the antidote to the general horror in the news. I also get to hear one of my favourite words "Homunculi" multiples times.

If you've seen The Detectorists then you'll know what pace this is (it's also from Mackenzie Crook)

  3. Finished! My new #painting is 'Magpies’ Treasure.'
There's gold & jewels (& other trinkets #Detectorists & #SmallProphets fans will recognise) but for the #birds the real treasure is those eggs.

    #watercolour size 435mm x 324mm

But here's the shocker... studies show that magpies are NOT actually attracted to shiny things! They’re cautious around unfamiliar things. Their curiosity and intelligence may have inspired the myth, which lives on in folklore - and in my painting.

  4. If you've been watching the development of my #painting of two #magpies... the treasure is coming!

Should I add a cycling proficiency badge do you think?

  5. I've been watching the #magpies in the trees & orchard opposite our house. They're pretty busy this time of year!

And they've inspired me to draft a composition for a new #painting. This afternoon I added the first tentative jewels of #watercolour. There's not much to see here yet, but I think even from this crappy photo you can see there will be treasure!

(Plus there will be all kinds of things to enjoy if you're a fan of #Detectorists and #SmallProphets.)

  6. @slowe we caught the detectorist towards the end of series two and had to catch up all of the episodes. It is just great television.

  7. If, like me, you're slightly obsessed with #birds, and you're watching the BBC's #SmallProphets, you probably did a double take when John James #Audubon’s book 'The #BirdsofAmerica' popped up so prominently in the plot! What a moment!

If you don't know the book, search online for the #NationalAudubonSociety online version and give your eyes a FEAST. It's mind-blowing.

I pay tribute to Audubon’s work in my own hand-painted #map of the #StateBirds of the USA - he’s featured at the foot of the #painting, in the middle.

  8. " If there were a chest of gold on offer to the viewer who could predict how the scene where Michael is mugged turns out – how it is utterly absurd, then deeply moving, then both at once – nobody would be able to claim the prize."

Two personal favorite moments: The rabbit on the cul-de-sac, and the #ModestMouse scene.

  9. #smallprophets is goddamn amazing. Half an hour, first episode: made me feel warm, sad, somehow - familiar, in a way I can't articulate.
Outstanding filming. This thing is a little masterpiece.

  10. #SmallProphets is the most joyful thing on TV since #Detectorists. Such warmth, humanity & acceptance as well as quirks & whimsy.

It's an antidote for a world that's gone completely BONKERS.

(UK viewers - binge the whole series on BBC iPlayer. We've already watched it thru 4 times.)

#MackenzieCrook (writer and director) is a bloody genius.

  11. I watched the first episode of #SmallProphets and it was just like the #Detectorists: slow, alright to watch, but who really cares?

Actually the slowness did piss me off. Basically it had half an episode of events padded out into a full episode.

I knew it was about the supernatural, but by half way through I realised that nothing (overtly) supernatural was going to happen until the very end.

And I was right! Shocker! Except the 'supernatural' ending was a badly photoshopped photo of a fairy in a jar.

And for doing that, the show can go fuck itself. I won't be held hostage by the promise of magical-things-to-come just as long as I keep watching this dreary pile of crud.

No, it didn't move me enough for me to care.

It might sound like I hated it, but really, I'm quite neutral about it -- indifferent -- which is why it took me a couple of days to actually bother to write this.

I so miss the more quickfire, action-packed comedy they used to do. I'm so bored of this middle-class, slow, pseudo-thoughtful plop, performed to the soundtrack of bland folk music.

    It's not comedy, it's *heh*

  12. Well, #SmallProphets

If Haruki #Murakami wrote #TheBigLebowski and set it for some reason in the North of England.

Some sprinkles of #Clerks as well, but very little, kind of as a homage?

    Enjoyed it.

  13. Inspired by the sublime #SmallProphets to watch #Detectorists. Toby Jones is quite astoundingly brilliant. What an actor.
