"Chilean Mummies Prove Europeans Brought Smallpox to the Americas—But That’s Not All

'Nobody would ever question that smallpox came to this hemisphere from colonization, but this proves it.'

Historians have long speculated that Europeans introduced smallpox to the Americas, which then killed hundreds of millions of Indigenous peoples. Genetic evidence has recently proved they were onto something.

In a newly published Science study, scientists revisited two mummies recovered from northern Chile in 1990 and performed an advanced DNA analysis of their genomes. The individuals, who presumably died between the late 15th and early 17th centuries, hosted a lost strain of variola viruses that cause smallpox—specifically the kind known to have affected Europeans around the same time period.

'This discovery provides the first molecular confirmation that smallpox was carried to the Americas during the colonial period,' Shigeki Nakagome, the study’s co-author and a geneticist at Trinity College Dublin in Ireland, said in a statement. “But beyond tracing the disease’s arrival, our study also sheds new light on how smallpox evolved.”

"Ancient mummy DNA recovered in #Chile has yielded the firmest evidence yet that #European colonization brought smallpox to the Americas. Smallpox was one of the #deadliest #diseases in human history before it was eradicated in 1980.. important molecular evidence, suggesting that the strains of smallpox infecting people in the Americas evolved first from #Europe"👈🧐

  8. British First Fleet likely sparked the devastating 1789 smallpox outbreak among Indigenous Australians, study finds

For more than two centuries, historians have argued over how smallpox reached Australia and triggered the deadly 1789 epidemic among Aboriginal communities. A new study points to the strongest answer yet. The disease most likely arrived with the British First Fleet in 1788...

Masks would also offer some protection in an aerosolized BW #smallpox attack.

Given the funding disruptions to #biowatch, the dismantling of the CDC's event response, the CDC's suspension of testing for #orthopoxvirus, the decapitation of our homeland security apparatus, the anti-vaxxer controlling the SNS and the Manchurian executive, it's a great idea to #maskup, especially at night games.

It's never too late to get vaccinated either, unless #RFKJr hesitates for four days.

In 1958, a representative from the Soviet Union came to the World Health Assembly with a proposal for the global elimination of #smallpox. Russia was also going to provide a new, more temperature stable vaccine, to make the project possible.

The last case in the US had been in 1947. the US stopped vaccination in 1971. The world celebrated in 1980 as the Soviet campaign was deemed a human triumph.

In 1993, a Russian scientist defected, and experts began to see the shape of the thing.

If they are have a 100M target firgure, they are talking about #smallpox.

R0 of 6, CFR of 33%, airborne spread, naive population. We would need widespread lockdowns to handle a major event. It's a pathogen that is idiosyncratic in lethality toward people.

They've been broadcasting what they've been planning across all social media for six years.

The camps are not for migrants, they are incubation chambers for citizens.

The modern anti-vaccine movement coincidences (c. 1998) with the creation of the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS).

From 1998-2003, the United States began to take the possibility of a large scale Russian backed #smallpox bioterror incident seriously. The preparation involved stockpiling enough smallpox vaccines for every American (300M+) and actively monitoring for arge scale aerosolized release (#BioWatch).

What if the US were now a rogue terror state? 👇

The current #mpox vaccine (Jynneos) is a #smallpox vaccine.

It was developed because the threat of smallpox is NOT eradicated.

The vaccine has proven safe and effective. A million people have gotten it in the US since 2022 with a very low rate of serious complications.

If we can talk about widespread #genocide, it's time to start talking about vaccinating the vulnerable.

  22. From the article:

"Yet, the most infamous records of intentionally spreading smallpox to Native Americans occurred in 1763 at Fort Pitt (present day downtown Pittsburgh). On June 24, 1763, William Trent, a fur trader commissioned at Fort Pitt, wrote in his journal after a failed negotiation between the British and the Delaware tribe. He stated that they had given the emissaries food, and as Trent wrote, “Out of our regard to them we gave them 2 Blankets and an (sic) Handkerchief out of the Small pox (sic) Hospital. I hope it will have the desired effect.”"

The antivaccinationist movement has a history in the 1930s (w/smallpox). Their same arguments began to appear around 1998 when the US began to take the threat of a #smallpox bio-terror attack seriously enough to start building a 300M dose vaccine stockpile.

The movement is not organic; it's not about measles vaccines. And what people do because of mistaken beliefs can absolutely affect everyone.

Smallpox has an R of ~6, a CFR of 30-100%, and effectively no one is immunized.

The worst-case scenario is #smallpox by a factor of 100.

R ~6, 0.3% immunity; 30% case fatality rate. That would be ~100M deaths for the US without a competent vaccine distribution campaign.

    They're building concentration camps.

If our enemies are eliminating vaccine access, the only model that matters is #smallpox

If they did all the math, they'd see only one vaccine matters as well.

It's increasingly likely none of the simulations they ran will be remotely accurate because a good portion of the population will already be gone.

  42. @BruceMirken

Do all the experts quoted think #smallpox was eliminated?

Are they ALL completely ignorant of the Soviet/RF bioweapons program?

Not ONE expert can connect the dot between drug-addled compromised Russian assets dismantling immunization programs and our national security?

$1T a year on defense, and ~17% of GDP on healthcare and nobody wants to solve the puzzle?
