I’ve been home for a week, and while it’s good to be back, I’m still figuring out what life looks like now that the crisis of the past year is behind me.

Three good things stand out:

1. being home with my husband

2. having space to breathe after months of intensity

3. and knowing I can move forward at my own pace even as I adjust to life without my dad.

On the final stretch home in Virginia, the sky stacked up with heavy clouds and rain in the forecast. After more than two months away, seeing that familiar road felt like the right ending point — a reminder that even with everything still shifting, getting home matters.

Got to watch fireworks over the baseball park at the same time as wild, snaky, branching purplish lightning over the beautiful city skyline. And hear the booming thunder -- and fireworks!

And for special double bonus happy points, I could also see the slowly revolving rainbow lights on the top of Commonwealth Stadium!

Messaging someone = being vulnerable

Possible harm that will come = their cease in ability to communicate with them

Communication = basic need. Ceasing it is harming the people involved, the same as physical pain.

They will blame the victims who got hurt by the silent treatment, using every justification such as the communication style they personally find they don't like.

oh man, I can’t stop laughing. I’m sitting in a #café and a little boy walks in – maybe 8 or 9 years old. he orders something tiny, espresso-sized – maybe a mini hot chocolate, maybe even #coffee. doesn’t matter. and let’s not even get into whether he should be drinking that at his age.

but he ordered it. got it served in one of those tiny espresso cups… and then had to carry it – full! – across the entire #café without spilling a drop.

not an easy task when you’re 8. and it really was a big #journey for him. he walked. slowly, carefully, like on a tightrope. eyes locked on the cup, every step deliberate and precise.

it took him a full two minutes to reach a free table – with some people’s eyes glued to him and his little #journey.

he finally sat down, drank the whole thing in three seconds… and walked out.

and I nearly burst out laughing. all that effort – for what? 🙂

Cleaning out their house, I found a box of old melamine plates that her MIL had given mom when she and dad were married, proclaiming that she shouldn’t use china every day. She has complained about this for years and said the same thing today.

I handed her the box, said, “Bring yourself some joy today. Go put them in the trash.” She looked at me, started saying something and I repeated myself. She grinned, took the box out to the trash can and put it in.

My mom asked me to recommend a place for lunch with two of her oldest friends and I took them to a courtyard I like, and they all enjoyed it. My mom and I walked there and we sat outside in the sunshine and had fun, got home half an hour before the rain started again.
