  6. #ActiveX, #Flash, #Silverlight are all dead b/c they were proprietary platforms that couldn't survive once some real competition from open standards and FOSS platforms happened.

People jumped on #JavaScript feet first, despite all its issues. Proprietary platforms on the web can't survive given a cross-platform environment.

The one sore thumb is #Perl. It lost a lot of popularity due to TIMTOWTDI complexity + the announced breakage in Perl 6. #Scala contributors should take notes.

  7. It's funny how people try to defend #Mozilla caving in to #DRM / #EME in 2014 because it will somehow push all users to #Chrome for the #Netflix when you consider the fact that Netflix only ended support for #Silverlight and thus required EME in September fucking 2023

    And did
#Firefox's "market share" in 2023 increase in comparison to 2014? Nope

  8. The "proposed" Silverlight film studios in Wanaka always seemed like a grandiose idea reliant on government funding.

    Now the project is dead.

Despite the offer of $4.5m from the Labour government, the people involved couldn't even raise funds for the land involved, let alone build $280m worth of studios and associated buildings.

The land now seems destined for a golf course & houses, rushed through under the fast-track legislation.

  9. They are expensive, but oh they work so well! That is why I am sticking with SIlverlight when it comes to socks. I'll wear one pair probably for the duration of the trip and keep a 2nd pair in the pack for in case. They hardly smell, but given the heat on the trail, I should be able to rinse out a pair and they'll soon be dry. They come in R-L pairs identified by the words Venture & Out

  10. The government has pulled the $4.5 million of support Labour had offered the mega film studio project in Wanaka.

Honestly, if the proposed studio will be as successful as the promoters suggest, it should be self-funding.

  14. This article on the zombie of Silverlight had me flashing back to the end of the 2000s, before HTML5 was a thing, when I was really concerned that MS was about to succeed in quashing the web once and for all for dynamic content/single page app type network apps. Like C# is to Java, Silverlight was Java Applets (and Flash) done right. There was no real alternative available. With Silverlight only having first class support on Windows with close second class support on OSX it seemed clear that all other desktops would be locked out. The open source Moonlight project, based on Mono, was always painfully behind. As much as I hate JavaScript I'm glad that the community got HTML/CSS and JavaScript polished up to not match what you could do with Silverlight but exceed it. Anyway, the spirit of Silverlight has been picked up by the community thanks to technologies like WASM and Blazor. Interesting read but not something I'd look to jump to personally. #microsoft #silverlight #moonlight #JavaScript #blazor #xaml

  16. @reallyjim @khalidabuhakmeh they quietly got it onto most of the worlds browsers via netflix. that wasn’t the problem. The core value proposition to me of #silverlight was that it taught me never to trust another closed source #microsoft platform ever again
