This is a major subtheme in my book in that magic has become a type of pollution in my world and yet the government is doing little to address the actual issue, mostly because they make money off of treating the side effects 🙃

Omyn: The blood of her enemies 😅 not really, most probably one of her dad's old stripey sweaters and a threadbare pair of jeans.
Hawk: Anything, as long as it's not Kevlar, but he'd probably enjoy something soft and silky more than he knows. -

For Omyn, it's a massive issue. She's a 'grit' and struggles to make ends meet what with her mom in prison and a little brother to look after.
For Hawk, as a cyborg soldier serving the HelsInc government, it's a non-issue. -

Omyn is none of those 😅 she definitely doesn't hate animals though, but she'd kill plants just by looking at them. Certain people she manages to tolerate 😉
Hawk on the other hand is just a big cinnamon roll with a soft spot for all living (and some robotic/cyborg) creatures.

Yes, since both my POV MCs in Silver Helix are white and their world is a near-future, alternate version of our own only with magic.
However, Omyn is poor and queer. I can't say much more about Hawk without giving away spoilers but his identity is complicated in its own way.

Aavik has a sweet tooth and a secret stash of chocolate bars in her desk. She's always covered in chocolate crumbs.

Oooh, good question! I love writing morally gray/ambiguous characters with both likable and detestable traits in equal measure (Hello, Omyn!). It is quite a lot of fun writing awful characters though 😅 but I also love writing cinnamon rolls like Rowan in By the Blood of Rowans, who is gentleness & compassion personified.

Aavik: My sister was everything to me and this damn government killed her because of the cryptomine in her DNA, which may or may not have allowed her to develop magical abilities. Now it's my life's mission to make sure no one ever has to go through the pain and grief I did! I will figure out a way to control magical DNA no matter the cost.

If I had the two POV characters from Silver Helix with me I'd be absolutely fine. Hawk is a super soldier trained to kill and Omyn is a badass in her own right. Those zombies wouldn't stand a chance! 😅

Omyn is great with a hammer...Definitely call her if you need something smashed 😅 She'd be genuinely great with home maintenance like painting though.
Hawk hasn't ever had to do home maintenance but he'd probably studiously figure it out.
Trip is a tech whiz. There's no electronic device he can't take apart and put back together better than new.

#Wordweavers Oct 10: Secondary Character POV: You can spend a whole day with the MC. What will you do?
If I'm hanging with Omyn, then we'd start our night at the Hellion where she serves drinks to the alternative crowd. Come 2am, I'll be watching her spray paint a mural with a strong political message somewhere she shouldn't while she vents about how ugly modern architecture is 😅 In the morning, we'll grab cheap coffee before heading home to make her little brother breakfast 😉

Other than all the regular sounds of a lower income neighborhood going about its day, Omyn might hear the distant sound of gunfire and screaming as protests against the totalitarian government are attacked by riot police. She's living in a city on the brink of revolution.

For me, characters & world-building go hand in hand. I usually start by asking "what kind of story do I want to tell?" and then develop both world and character to reflect that, letting the character evolve from that world.
This is how Omyn came to be: she is a product of my gritty, dystopian, post-apocalyptic Helsinki & provided the best POV to tell the story I wanted to.

This is why I have to remain in total control of this city, because if people like Omyn ever realized their true potential, humanity would not survive.
I'll do everything every I can to protect the future from smartass teenage punks who think they know better.
