Naruto Path of the Ninja with Merrilee O’neil (Fear Coded)
By the mid-2000s, Naruto had pulled off something most manga-to-anime properties never manage: it wasn’t just popular, it was everywhere, spinning off a small army of video games across nearly every system with a screen, like Naruto himself used Shadow Clone Jutsu on the entire games industry and nobody thought to stop him. Somewhere in that flood of Ninja Councils and Clash of Ninjas sits Naruto: Path of the Ninja, the entry that decided the best way to honor Kishimoto’s story wasn’t just punching (though there’s plenty of that too) but actually letting you live through the Land of Waves and the Chūnin Exams one turn-based battle at a time.
Path of the Ninja debuted on the Game Boy Advance in Japan back in 2004, then took a leisurely three years to reach American shelves in 2007, arriving on the Nintendo DS instead, because by the time they got around to localizing it, the GBA already felt like last decade’s news. You pick from six familiar faces, Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura, Shikamaru, Neji, and Rock Lee, pair them into formations for bonus combo attacks, and work through more than 90 jutsu, some of which you cast on the DS touchscreen by frantically scribbling a shape with the stylus, which is either a clever nod to hand seals or just a fun way to give yourself a cramp. The story runs all the way to the Chunin Exam invasion and a face-off with Shukaku, and if you’re wondering whether you can also fight Itachi as a secret bonus boss, the answer is: only if you own the Japanese version. The English release quietly deleted that fight but somehow forgot to scrub his name from the end credits, which is the video game equivalent of hiding a body and leaving the shovel leaning against the wall.
Making another through the Play Comics dojo is Merrilee O’Neil of Fear Coded, last seen on the show trying to keep pace with the Flash. This time she’s trading super speed for shadow clones, hand seals, and a Konoha headband, so at least the running is a little more sustainable.
So form your hand seals, grab your kunai pouch, and let’s find out if Path of the Ninja earned its headband as a worthy trip through early Naruto, or if it should’ve stayed back at the Academy with the rest of the genin.
Learn such things as:
- Isn’t the world today better, with games coming out worldwide at basically the same time?
- How can you use a console’s gimmick to really lean into the gameplay?
- Can a game stick to the established story a bit too well?
- And so much more!
You can find Merrilee being the main driver of the Fear Coded account on BlueSky @fearcodedpod.bsky.social on her podcast Fear Coded.

Dragon Ball Z Budokai 2 with Russell Moran (Kaiju ComicCast)
At some point in the early 2000s, someone looked at the Dragon Ball Z manga and anime, a story full of screaming men who power up for entire episodes, hair that defies physics, and villains who monologue long enough for the protagonist to reach a new power level, and said, “Yes. This. But make it a fighting game. On two, and only two, consoles.” And thus, Dragon Ball Z Budokai 2 arrived on PS2 and GameCube, ready to let you spend an unreasonable amount of time unlocking characters and pretending you know what a Fusion Dance is supposed to look like in real life.
This episode, we’re going Super Saiyan on the whole thing. The game, the manga, the anime, the drama, the capsules, the questionable story mode decisions. All of it. And joining us to power up the conversation is Russell Moran from Kaiju ComiCast, who brings exactly the kind of kaiju-sized enthusiasm this franchise demands.
So take a deep breath, squeeze out every last drop of ki you’ve got, and let’s get into it. Your hair may or may not turn gold by the end. No promises.
Learn such things as:
- What’s worse than taking a risk and totally failing?
- What’s keeping us from getting the epic Toriyama Universe fighting crossover event that we all want to badly?
- Can you really say that the roster has 50 different characters when 10 of them are different versions of the same dude?
- And so much more!
You can find Russell on BlueSky @kaijucomiccast, Instagram @kaijucomiccast, and of course at his podcast Kaiju ComiCast.

Naruto Ultimate Ninja with Cory Byrd (Byrds Eye View Comics)
Grab your custom jutsu hand seals and prepare to feel a crushing sense of inadequacy when comparing your reaction time to a ninja’s because we’re diving shadow clone deep into the first Naruto Ultimate Ninja game on PlayStation 2! This week we’re channeling our inner shinobi to explore how Bandai Namco took Masashi Kishimoto’s legendary manga about a determined orange-suited underdog and transformed it into a frantic button-mashing tournament fighter that somehow convinced an entire generation of fans that they could recreate iconic Naruto moments if they just hit the attack button fast enough and screamed at their TV harder than Naruto himself.
Released during the golden age of anime-to-console adaptations, the Naruto Ultimate Ninja games became the de facto way fans could live out their ninja fantasies—assuming your ninja fantasy involves janky camera angles, occasionally unresponsive inputs, and the kind of special effect visual soup that makes you wonder if you’re actually watching a jutsu or if your PS2 is just having a mild aneurysm. With fighters pulled straight from the Hidden Leaf Village and beyond, these games proved that sometimes the best way to honor a beloved manga is to give players the chance to make Naruto fight characters he had absolutely no reason to fight (looking at you, random filler villains).
This episode, we’re absolutely stoked to welcome Cory Byrd from Byrds Eye View Comics—a fellow enthusiast of all things sequential art and gaming who can probably explain why Naruto’s popularity transcended manga, anime, AND video games with the kind of clarity that makes marketing departments weep with envy. Together, we’ll investigate whether these games managed to capture the heart, humor, and hyperkinetic energy of Kishimoto’s creation, or if they just left us face-first in the dirt like Naruto at the beginning of the series.
So synchronize your chakra, practice your most devastating combo, and prepare for an episode that’s guaranteed to be more chaotic than a Sand Village invasion and infinitely more entertaining than watching filler arcs about onigiri eating contests.
Learn such things as:
- Can a game truly capture the experience of having ninjas solve political problems through friendship when there’s no friendship stat on the screen?
- How many ninja village headbands would it take to actually run an economy, or is that question unanswerable because the series never bothered explaining it?
- Is it more important for characters in a fighter to be balanced or accurate?
- And so much more!
You can find Cory on Instagram @ByrdsEyeOfficial, the Byrds Eye View Comics Facebook page, and of course his website Byrds Eyes View Comics.

Yu-Gi-Oh Worldwide Edition – Stairway to the Destined Duel & Falsebound Kingdom with GothJon (2 ACT Podcast)
Welcome, card-slinging strategy seekers, to another episode of Play Comics where we shuffle through the deck of comic-to-game adaptations with all the precision of a first-turn Exodia draw gone horribly wrong! Today we’re summoning not one, but TWO Yu-Gi-Oh! adventures that took Yugi’s world from the small screen to handheld hysteria and living room chaos.
First up, we’re diving into Yu-Gi-Oh! Worldwide Edition – Stairway to the Destined Duel for the Game Boy Advance, a portable card battler that somehow managed to cram the entire Battle City tournament into a device smaller than Joey’s brain capacity. Then we’re teleporting to the GameCube dimension with Yu-Gi-Oh! The Falsebound Kingdom, where virtual reality meets real-time strategy in a combination so bizarre it makes Kaiba’s obsession with ancient Egyptian card games seem perfectly reasonable.
Joining us for this interdimensional dueling discussion is the magnificent GothJon from the 2 ACT Podcast, whose expertise in anime, cinema, and all things delightfully dark makes him the perfect co-host to help us navigate these shadow realm gaming adventures. Whether we’re discussing the satisfying simplicity of portable dueling or the ambitious madness of strategic monster management, GothJon brings the kind of analytical insight that would make even Pegasus jealous.
So grab your duel disk, power up that millennium puzzle, and prepare for an episode that explores how faithfully these games captured the heart of the cards… or whether they sent us straight to the shadow realm of gaming disappointment. Will these Yu-Gi-Oh! adaptations prove they’ve got what it takes to stand the test of time, or will they end up banished to the extra deck of forgotten licensed gamesmes?
Time to duel… digitally!
Learn such things as:
- How well do these card games hold up these days with rules and metagame changes?
- Do you really need to be a character from the franchise to feel emerged into the franchise?
- Will Chris realize that he can watch the anime without playing the card game?
- And so much more!
You can find GothJon on YouTube @gothjon, the 2 ACT Podcast on Spotify, and wherever you get your podcasts.

Mazin Saga Mutant Fighter with Stik Braxton (Together we Anime, Too Tall Boyz, Clueless Vino)
Greetings, fellow arcade archaeologists and button-mashing historians! This week on Play Comics, we’re diving headfirst into the delightfully bizarre world of Mazin Saga: Mutant Fighter for the Sega Genesis – that wonderfully weird 1993 hybrid that somehow convinced an entire development team that what the world really needed was a game where you could punch mutant biobeasts in the face AND grow to kaiju size for boss battles. Based on Go Nagai’s MazinSaga manga (which itself was a mashup of his Mazinger and Devilman universes), this Almanic Corporation creation proved that sometimes the best way to adapt source material is to throw it in a blender with some Streets of Rage DNA and see what emerges from the primordial gaming ooze.
We’re absolutely thrilled to welcome Stik Braxton from Together We Anime, Too Tall Boyz, and Clueless Vino to help us navigate this mecha-infused madness. Stik brings his signature blend of pop culture expertise and comedic timing to help us answer the eternal question: does turning Koji Kabuto into a beat-’em-up protagonist while God Kaiser Hell destroys civilization make for faithful adaptation, or just really entertaining chaos? Armed with his Mazinger Z armor and an inexplicable ability to size-shift for dramatic effect, our hero must save humanity from an underground bunker situation that makes your average zombie apocalypse look like a casual Tuesday.
So dust off your Genesis controllers, prepare for some seriously chunky sprite animation, and join us as we explore whether this genre-bending fever dream successfully captured the essence of its manga source material or just created something gloriously unhinged in the process. We’ll examine how faithful giant robot fights translate to 16-bit glory, why boss battles needed their own fighting game engine, and whether any of this actually makes sense when you’re having this much fun pressing buttons.
Learn such things as:
- How to successfully blend beat-’em-up mechanics with one-on-one fighting without completely losing your mind
- Why God Kaiser Hell remains one of the most intimidatingly named video game villains in Genesis history
- The exact moment when “faithful adaptation” becomes “let’s just make something awesome instead”
- And so much more!
You can find Stik at too many places, so let’s just make it easy and send you to the Clueless Creative Linktree.

Naruto Ninja Council with Luke Herr (D’OhMance Dawn)
Believe it or not, ninja enthusiasts, this week on Play Comics we’re kunai-diving into the pixelated shinobi wasteland that is Naruto: Ninja Council for the Game Boy Advance – because apparently someone at Tomy thought the best way to honor everyone’s favorite orange-clad ramen addict was to trap him in a handheld prison with combat mechanics more frustrating than trying to explain the Chunin Exams to your grandmother. Released in 2003, this side-scrolling “adventure” promised to let players master the art of ninjutsu while battling through iconic locations from the Hidden Leaf Village, but what it actually delivered was a gaming experience so repetitive that even Naruto’s shadow clone jutsu would get bored of itself.
Joining us for this digital journey through the Land of Mediocre Adaptations is Luke Herr from D’ohmance Dawn – a man who’s witnessed more anime-to-game train wrecks than a rejected Akatsuki recruitment video. Together, we’ll explore how this GBA “masterpiece” managed to spawn not one, not two, but THREE sequels despite having the gameplay depth of a puddle in the desert and graphics that make early Dragon Ball Z filler episodes look like Studio Ghibli productions.
So grab your headband and prepare for an episode that’s more entertaining than actually grinding through the same three enemy types for hours on end – which, let’s face it, isn’t exactly setting the bar at Hokage level. Will this portable ninja adventure redeem itself through sheer nostalgic chakra, or will it vanish faster than Sasuke after a family reunion? Tune in to discover if this manga adaptation belongs in the Hall of Fame… or should be sealed away forever like the Nine-Tailed Fox!
Learn such things as:
- Is it dangerous to have pretty eyes?
- Is all manga and anime just a giant metaphor for the horrible nature of man?
- Does a game being fun make it a good intro to the franchise?
- And so much more!
You can find Luke over on D’OhMance Dawn, Exiled, Multiversal Q, and RPG Pals Club. Or catch him on BlueSky @koltreg or his Patreon, found under Luke Herr.

Dragon Ball Z Taiketsu with Andrew Young (Behold!)
Gather ‘round, Dragon Ball devotees and gluttons for punishment! This week on Play Comics, we’re subjecting ourselves to the digital equivalent of getting hit by Frieza’s Death Beam repeatedly-Dragon Ball Z Taiketsu for the Game Boy Advance. Imagine taking the most explosive anime franchise in history and cramming it into a game with all the fiery intensity of a damp firecracker. Spoiler alert: This isn’t a battle for glory-it’s a battle for survival against one of the most bafflingly awful licensed games ever conceived.
Joining me in this masochistic quest is Andrew Young from Behold!, who’s agreed to lend his expertise (and his remaining sanity) to dissect this pixelated travesty. Together, we’ll answer the burning question: How did a game about planet-destroying superhumans end up feeling as thrilling as watching paint dry on Master Roshi’s houseboat? Hint: It involves more clipping issues than Yamcha’s career and combat mechanics flatter than Krillin’s scalp.
From animations that resemble a PowerPoint presentation gone rogue to a soundtrack that sounds like a kazoo orchestra trapped in a washing machine, Taiketsu doesn’t just drop the ball-it spikes it into the core of the Earth, unleashes a Spirit Bomb of disappointment, and then forgets to animate the explosion. Whether you’re here for the schadenfreude or just morbid curiosity, grab your Dragon Radar and a stiff drink. This episode’s gonna hurt. A lot.
Learn such things as:
- What happens when the developers are put not only behind the 8 ball, but also in front of a really high cliff on a windy day and that cliff is made of ice?
- So I guess games really do need a story don’t they? Even if it’s just a hand wave at one.
- Is this the new worst representation of the comic source material?
- And so much more!
You can find Andrew by looking at the Behold! account on Twitter or of course the Behold! website. You should especially check out the episode looking at X-Men 97 because I love that series and need something good in my life, and the episode looking at Fan4stick because it has me in it.

Tecmo Cup Soccer Game (Based on Captain Tsubasa) with Luke Herr (D’OhMance Dawn)
Lace up your cleats and dust off your NES cartridges because this week’s Play Comics is kicking off with a real goal-scorer! We’re diving headfirst into the pixelated pitch of Tecmo Cup Soccer Game, the NES classic that’s more RPG than FIFA. Join us as we explore this 8-bit reimagining of the beloved Captain Tsubasa manga, where special moves are more powerful than Pelé’s right foot and every match is a turn-based tactical showdown.
And who’s that coming onto the pitch? Oh sweet we’re joined by the incomparable Luke Herr from D’OhMance Dawn, who’s here to add some romantic flair to our soccer shenanigans. Will Luke score a hat-trick of puns? Can our host avoid getting a red card for excessive enthusiasm? And just how many soccer metaphors can we cram into one episode? Tune in to find out!
So grab your controller, warm up those thumbs, and get ready to shout “GOOOOOAAAAAL!” at your podcast app. It’s time to see if Tecmo Cup Soccer Game lives up to its manga roots or if it’s just playing offside with our nostalgia. Let’s kick off this episode!
Learn such things as:
- What if Nintendo World Cup was a manga?
- What king of parents let their child go halfway around the world with someone they just met?
- How do you make a sports game with basically no sports gameplay?
- And so much more!
You can find Luke over on D’OhMance Dawn, Exiled, Multiversal Q, and RPG Pals Club. Or catch him on BlueSky @koltreg or his Patreon, found under Luke Herr.

Yu-Gi-Oh The Duelists of the Roses with Michael Bivens (Quest for 5, Alcove)
Welcome to another episode of Play Comics, where we shuffle the deck of video game adaptations and draw a card from the past! This week we’re diving into the world of Yu-Gi-Oh! The Duelists of the Roses, a game that takes the historical British War of the Roses and gives it a fantastical twist through the lens of the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga. Imagine Richard III and Henry Tudor not as mere historical figures, but as duelists with decks full of monsters and magic!
Joining us for this epic clash of history and fantasy is the illustrious Michael Bivens from Quest for 5 and Alcove. Michael brings his unique perspective and a flair for the dramatic as we explore how this PlayStation 2 classic blends card battles with royal intrigue. Whether you’re a fan of history, card games, or just love a good mash-up, this episode is sure to entertain and enlighten.
So grab your Millennium Puzzle and prepare for a duel of epic proportions! Will the Yorkists or the Lancastrians claim victory in this card-based battlefield? Tune in to find out, and maybe you’ll learn a trick or two to use in your next duel.

- And so much more!
