  1. End of era as #BBC switches off #Radio4 #LongWave service
First BBC Long Wave transmissions in the mid-1920s were on 1600m or 187.5 kHz.
A famous BBC programme tied to Long Wave is #ShippingForecast, a weather bulletin for deep-sea fishermen which became cult listening on land and now features on FM and digital, and there’s even a probably-apocryphal tale that nuclear submarine captains would once use its presence or absence to judge whether nuclear war had occurred.

  3. I like listening to the shipping forecast. I just don’t like being awake to do so.
At least it isn’t the early edition today.

  4. As darkness falls, the general cargo vessel 'Cellus' pictured being accompanied by the Port Of Sunderland pilot as it sets a course out into the stormy waters of the North Sea.
If you are a seafarer, you are likely to pay heed to the daily shipping forecasts giving advance warnings of sea conditions.
Learned recently that this year the Shipping Forecast, as broadcast daily on BBC radio, is celebrating the centenary of the very first transmission.
The daily recitation of sea conditions to be expected in the enigmatically-named sea areas has developed something of a cult following.
The nightly script, which some say is akin to poetry, has its very own musical prelude, namely 'Sailing By', composed by Ronal Binge.
At just after 12.45am on BBC Radio Four, the broadcast delivers a forecast for 31 marine areas, followed by inshore coastal weather forecasts and current reports from coastal weather stations all around the UK.

  10. As someone who during two longer stays in the UK listened to the Shipping Forecast every morning for months at a time (by virtue of host family members needing it for their jobs), this is just full of memories and oddity.

  13. BBC Radio 4 is doing the centenary of the #shippingforecast today and it's lovely. "Rockall Malin Hebrides, that's my favorite bit", someone says, and who can argue?

  15. I’m enjoying BBC R4’s programmes celebrating the centenary of the Shipping Forecast.
I started sailing before GPS and mobile phones. Waking early to listen to the Shipping Forecast was routine. It’s not that many years ago that a morning forecast had me waking my wife, casting off even before coffee, and making a run across Lyme Bay ahead of forecast strong winds.

  17. **There are warnings of gales**

    There are warnings of gales
Depending on where you are in relation to the steep white cliffs or the brown dirt hillsides
Depending on the lush green valleys filled with cows and sheep and goats and pigs
Looking out across the wheat fields in the late summer filled with the sway of the long stemmed grasses wishing they were oceans free of human intent for their impending death
    Somewhere out in the world
    There are warnings of gales
Inner turmoils or extra terrestrial battles
Or arguments in the corner shop over who could have the last packet of plain chocolate digestives
It is all relevant. Everything has its own equivalency. Each strike of potential catastrophe is equivalent to the next.
I recall the storm of 1987, which I slept through like a soft baby in a warm blanket. My mother called the following morning and I had no idea what she was talking about. The gales had swirled around me and might have caused total destruction, yet, I was safe in my swaddling clothes of care and love and a good bedsitter in Earls Court.
But, be aware of warnings of gales. In the end they will get us all.

A poem in celebration of the Shipping forecast. (bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006qfvv)

  20. Broadcasting

The BBC's radio Shipping Forecast celebrates it's 100th year in 2025. As a commemoration on New Years' Day, BBC Radio 4 is transmitting programmes themed on the Shipping Forecast , from the serious to the sublime.

One example (which may or may not be included) can be heard here. It includes the line "COW in sea area Shannon, moving eastwards. Sorry, that should be LOW."

  22. There is something quintessential about the Shipping Forecast. It's very British. And this is despite the fact the Seewetterdienst Hamburg also issues a Shipping Forecast [which I get by email]...

I listened to it when I was in Toronto in 2022. The time difference meant being able to hear the 00:48 GMT/BST edition when it was still light, which was exceptionally strange. But it reminded me of home, island living... despite being a fair distance from the coast #ShippingForecast

  30. When I wake up in the middle of the night, one trick I use to get back to sleep is to listen to the latest Shipping Forecast. The rhythm and cadence, the relaxed delivery and mentally picturing what the wind in each region is doing help me to drift back to sleep.

Except it doesn't work when the forecast is FUCKING TERRIFYING. I've never heard it go up to hurricane force before 😱
