I’m halfway through #Shadowbringers with my #ffxiv alt, it continues to be my favorite of the expansions. The story in all of them, from ARR onwards is fantastic so it’s hard to pick a favorite sometimes, but I love the story in this one and getting to go from here to #Endwalker is always a treat. At the rate I’m going. I should complete the Dawntrail content again just in time for the new expansion to drop.

I've been saying for a few years now that #FFXIV #Shadowbringers feels like the sequel to a game we never got to play, and I just realized #Dawntrail feels the same.
Shadowbringers is the sequel to Ardbert's adventures, and if I had to compare it to anything I'd go with Lunar 2, which I enjoyed far more than the original; or at least Pokemon BW2, which I liked about the same as the original.
Dawntrail is the sequel to Gulool Ja Ja's adventure, but in terms of comparison... it's more like FFIV: The After Years. Did some interesting things, had some bits I really liked, but all in all just made me wish I was playing the original.

Caius had a busy day today: went to a venue for the first time in mooooooonths (thank you to @avaelin !) and then finally lost his sprout 😅 I'm not kidding when I say my playstyle is 90% dillydallying and 10% msq. Playtime was 1,120 hours and 2 min to complete Shadowbringers :neocat_laugh: Three classes at 90, one at 81, and a wide variety from level 0 to 79 for the others.

I dunno about y’all, but to me the version of that tick group where all the ticks have roughly-equal-amplitude peaks makes the fact the tick group consists of multiple ticks very obvious… but at their original amplitudes relative to each other, we get a nice cohesive sound that sounds like a single tick of a clock.

It’s entirely possible that the sound designers of FF14’s dev team, if the sound is synthetic and not a recording of a physical clock, may have taken a series of single clicking sounds at different pitches, assigned one to each tick group and just varied the pitch and speed of the clicking withing that tick group, but I have no way of confirming that for sure.

… some of those definitely sound like distinctly different pitches to me; I wasn’t able to graphically confirm that with Audacity’s spectrum analysis tool, the time selections were all too short, so determining them to be different pitches came down to my own hearing and the quality of my more-than-decade-old Sennheiser headphones.

… what I found that I did not expect is that each “tick” isn’t just one burst of sound, isn’t just one “tick”, it’s a composite of at least three or four different ticks, three or four different bursts.
To start, I made things easier on myself when it came to staring at the waveform by amplifying the sample as a whole so that the peak amplitude went no higher than -4 decibels from my volume limit.

Trying to recreate realistic sounds got me started on my current sound synthesis experimentation saga, trying to figure out what combination of individual frequencies and amplitudes of a bunch of sine waves could be used to recreate sounds that are synthetic but don’t sound synthetic…… I have intently learned how incredibly difficult this is, but I still enjoy it a bunch.

Well I now understand why people call the 4th #FinalFantasyXIV expansion "Feelsbringers" holy shit! I was a wreck last night.
This game truly is amazing, and apparently I've still only just got started.
I really can't wait until next Thursday's stream to have my emotions destroyed even more. Fucking hell!
