  1. Guess Where SF, July 1964
A recent scan from the SF Heritage Archive. The building still stands and looks about the same. Walkers may recognize it. (yes, of course you can look it up in the city directory, but give it a shot) #sfmemory #sfhistory #sanfrancisco

  11. SF Airport, 1966
It was only a drill for the Fire Department that James Martin photographed one day, still I found these pretty dramatic. I don't think they do this sort of thing anymore. #sfmemory #sfhistory

  16. Sam Crow Portraits, 1910s
Generally speaking, I prefer pictures of the built environment, buildings, and streets, but the Sam Crow negatives have so many fantastic portraits of people, some identifiable, some not, some places I know a lot I don't. I include them on SFMemory.org because despite not knowing much about them it seems wrong to keep them from you. #sfmemory #sfhistory

View east on King Street from 4th Street. Tracks and trains of the Southern Pacific railroad at left, the terminal at 3rd Street in the background. King Street was really in the middle of the passenger and freight yards.
In 1976 the 3rd Street Terminal was demolished a new smaller one was built at 4th street (would be out of frame to the left) Now large residential buildings dominate this view. #sfhistory #sfmemory #sanfrancisco #southernpacific

  47. Market Street, Aug 23, 1949
One of the problems I face regularly is figuring out what I'm looking at and deciding, while looking at a negative if it's worth scanning, sometimes I don't know. I scanned these night time parade shots from news photog Aaron Rubino because I knew it was Market Street and identifiable. (he shot a lot of society page matrons, yawn)

Once they were on the scanner I was surprised to see all the units comprised of African-American marchers, majorettes, and marching bands. (people of color in these old collections are pretty rare)

The Warfield Marquee (The Great sinner with Gregory Peck and Ava Gardner) gave me a month.

Sure enough I found that the Improved Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the world (Newspapers called them The "Colored Elks" in language of the time) had a convention and parade on August 23rd.

Here are the pictures seen for the first time in 77 years (hopefully I'll find some more in the stack) #sfhistory #sfmemory #SanFrancisco
