  1. You: I'm making a chicken casserole tonight.

That one friend who won't stop talking about that one time they were assimilated: Chicken? Ah, species 736. They make excellent drumsticks. But have you considered regeneration?

  5. It's fun to map #StarTrek #Voyager #SevenOfNine character arc (at least in Season 4, as far as I've gotten) onto #childhood development

First, she screams and thrashes mindlessly against leaving the safety of the Cube/womb. Her adopted mother, Janeway, puts her in the brig/crib. After an incident, they make sure she can't activate anything or stick her fingers in sockets.

Next she starts learning and doing things. She "works with" Kim and others but it is side-by-side play, not cooperation.

After a while, she starts to develop and express opinions. These mainly consist of rebelling against Janeway. She is now TerribleTwoOfNine. She is sent to her room as punishment.

During all of this, she has regular checkups to update her nutritional and developmental needs with the Pediatric Medical Hologram. The Doctor has also been charged with teaching her preschool skills like basic social interaction.

Eventually we reach tonight's episode, "One".

Seven doesn't like the other children and wants to play by herself. She rebels against her teacher by asking a string of questions.

Then Janeway treats Seven like a Big Girl--we need your help, can you do it? Yes of course I do it!

    Except she almost can't.

At her lowest point Seven is invited back to the womb. No! An imaginary Borg tells her to give up. No, I'm an individual! (Another developmental stage.)

She solves a dilemma with her first instinct, then feels guilty and makes a moral correction to it. That's not something TerribleTwo would do, but it is something Seven does.

At the end of the episode she nervously walks up to another group of kids and asks to play *with* them.

  6. "The Omega Directive" is one of the dumbest #StarTrek #Voyager episodes I've seen in a while.

I assume the motivation was to have #SevenOfNine have spiritual experience. Sure, fine.

But in the pell-mell rush to make that happen they created an episode that fails to work in almost every way. Just a few examples

    1. Top secret info hidden away in the ship's computer that nobody has ever noticed and by the way multiple entities have stolen (and which the Borg have anyway)

    2. After all the hooha over secret directives Chakotay easily convinces Janeway to let them help. (Condition: Only senior staff can know! Meanwhile, multiple nobodies are on the bridge while they shout omega-related facts to each other.)

    3. Super powerful "molecule"---where to even start. Do the writers know what molecules are?

    4. False dichotomy of destroying ALL the molecules vs "risking half the quadrant" to try stabilizing them. Why not destroy all but a handful, then stabilize the rest on the already-destroyed moon in the already-destroyed system?

    5. Speaking of which, the alien scientist says this is their only hope to survive. Too bad! Prime Directive says we can doom you but are powerless to save you!

    6. Then they fly off into the sunset *with the injured scientists* after saying they'd give them back.

A pig-headed focus on maneuvering one character to a particular point with no regard for what damage we do to the rest of the story or even the world-building. Awful, awful writing.

  7. We've really been enjoying #SevenOfNine while watching all of #StarTrek

It's really amazing how many different "smart characters who struggle with understanding emotions and social cues" this show has created

#Voyager alone has Tuvok, The Doctor/EMH and Seven. Spock and Data hardly seem to need mentioning. But the point is that their stories are very different.

Data doesn't have them but wants to

    Spock does but doesn't

Seven is confused by them and has some trouble regulating (which resonates with #autism but also with young children which she sort of is, narratively)

Tuvok is always complaining about illogic but is also fully dedicated to a hierarchy that forces him to follow it--essentially always masking

The Doctor: In a way, the most enigmatic. He has emotions and seems to understand them, but neither of those things should be true. He's the ST equivalent of a first aid kit.

Ich liebe SevenofNine in der Picard-Serie 🤩
Muss man schon sagen, die hat echt Eier! 😁
Alles an dem Charakter ist einfach mega 😍😊

  9. 🚀 Happy #StarTrekDay!
In 1968 Star Trek boldly introduced interracial kissing to US television. It's no surprise that the franchise has always been a beacon of progressive values.

Speaking of progress, I hear that Jeri Ryan (Seven of Nine) had quite the moment at a recent convention, passionately telling Trump supporters to "go f*themselves." The irony of #MUGAs attending a comic con, only to find themselves in a sea of progressive.

How is the universe portrayed in Star Trek a truly egalitarian utopia, and how does the world subtly uphold the hegemonic values of our present day?

  17. Fun 'Star Trek: Voyager' watch-through update.

I ATE season 4 in quick fashion. I'm knee deep into season 5 now, watching 'Bride of Chaotica' S05E12, and am struck by just how much the likes of 'WandaVision' owe to Star Trek, as a whole, not just this fantastical example of an episode. How much Star Trek itself inherits from classic sci-fi serials and anthologies, comic, radio, film, and television, and how much it relishes that aspect of its own DNA. TOS IS classic sci-fi and I love that these 90s iterations never shied away from that inherently camp heritage.

'Voyager' finally feels like it's found that happy space the best of DS9 & TNG did between serious sci-fi, as they struggle to find a way home, and joyous, gloriously silly sci-fi what-if episodes of stand alone adventures. Characters able to enter both spaces, like Janeway has finally got a chance to, feel much more three-dimensional and fully fleshed out. And I like her more and more as a result.

I did not lament the loss of Kes, the not quiet two year old love interest was so poorly realised as a character. Her replacement, Seven of Nine, has gone miles in realising that other major thread of the Galaxay, the question of what being human means. I missed so much of her origin story and I'm glad I have the details now. I have thoughts about her costuming, saved for another day.

Dare I say it, Neelix is not even irritating, and there have been episodes where he is featured that have been wholly enjoyable. Notably, 'Once Upon a Time' S05E05, that really served to push the reality of the overarching narrative of having an ETA at home of 75 years, without shoving it in your face. It was subtle, emotional, and walked the line between the serious and silly very well.

As I've got 2.5 seasons to, I look forward to the series holding at this quality.
