Setting up a dedicated game server? The Ryzen 7 vs Ryzen 9 debate is a common hurdle.
💻 Ryzen 7 X3D: The ultimate single-thread sprinter. Perfect for #Minecraft and #Rust.
🖥️ Ryzen 9: The 16-core workhorse. Essential for running heavy multi-server clusters (like ARK).Skip the GPU & optimize your CPU!

Successfully migrated two reasonably large Wordpress MU sites onto new kit. Close to zero downtime. Brought in SSO. All works perfectly until someone tries to upload an image and hits the PHP max upload limit of 2 meg! Why oh why does it still default to such a low value? And why do I never ever remember to change it on a new install? #php #linux #serveradmin

I finally got borgmatic to work under systemd on my mastodon instance. I've been struggling with it for about a week since I first got it to work from the command line. This takes a big load off my mind. Now if darkmoon craps the bed, I'll have seven days of backups to fall back on.

Progress on backups for Darkmoon.
I have successfully made backups for both the database and the filesystem using borgmatic and borgbackup. It uses encryption and SSH keys, and can supply those automatically. Running the full backup from scratch takes about an hour and a half. Subsequent backups take about half an hour. I think that is acceptable.
Now it's ready for automation.

This is interesting. It could make installing headless systems a lot easier.

Hello everyone. I'm managing a mastodon server (not this one obviously) and I have a long list of hashtags to approve. Over 2000 pages. Is there a way to approve them all or start fresh with incoming hashtags?? Because this is a lot!

Check this out. In the screenshot below, you can see me pinging my mastodon server over the wireguard vpn. But I'm using a domain name?
I installed bind9 on my vpn server, and it serves up wireguard IP addresses for custom domain names. Note the TLD, which is "wg". That is not a valid TLD and only exists on my wireguard network thanks to the magic of bind9.

Postfix experts: can I use nginx to reverse proxy email, or should I use postfix to do that? I would like to eventually move my email to a home server, behind a Wireguard VPN, if that's even feasible.

Mastodon v4.6.0 requires Ruby v3.3, but my version of Ubuntu (24.04) only has 3.2.3. Anyone have a good suggestion? Otherwise I guess I'll just wait a while.

If you're self-hosting or managing a dedicated server, moving from Apache/Nginx to OpenLiteSpeed can drastically reduce your RAM footprint during traffic spikes.
Unlike Apache's process-per-request model, OLS uses an event-driven architecture, comes with a server-level full-page cache (LSCache), and supports HTTP/3 out of the box.

The documentation is a major PITA, but I feel like I'm finally getting the hang of #NGINX My proxy server is handling a lot of different services across multiple upstreams, terminating and pre-reading SSL for different services, and now also running as a simple file server with http auth for transferring video files for a project to the editor.
Anyone have a book or reference guide that is more useful than the main NGINX docs?

Immer mehr Nutzer:innen nutzen #AdBlocker im Browser. Diese blocken auch Statistiktools wie #Matomo
Macht es da eigentlich noch Sinn, diese zu nutzen?

What http code should I be sending to crawlers to make them stop trying with the rest of their known database on my site?

Why do enterprise architectures prefer bare-metal in Singapore over public cloud nodes in other APAC regions? It comes down to physics and submarine cables. Singapore is the primary landing point for networks like APG and SJC, allowing direct, high-speed routing to Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines without bouncing through distant global nodes.

We've put together a comprehensive guide on navigating storage architectures. We dive into:
Why "Fake RAID" on motherboards is a trap.
The mathematical differences (and rebuild risks) between RAID 1, RAID 5, and RAID 10.
If you manage servers, self-host critical infrastructure, or deploy enterprise applications, this is worth a read.

Network queuing is the silent killer of application performance. You cannot fix a saturated uplink with more CPU power. If you are handling large e-commerce catalogs, ML data pipelines, or high-definition streaming, a 1Gbps port will queue packets and spike latency. We just published a deep dive on the mathematical tipping points where 10Gbps bare metal becomes an operational requirement.

Just finished upgrading my Mastodon instance to 4.5.8 from 4.5.5. It went pretty well, but I had to shut down nginx and mastodon services for the upgrade process to complete successfully. I think the system ran out of memory during asset precompile, but I'm not certain. I'll have to monitor that next time.

Are you tired of relying on cloud APIs for large language models?
The NVIDIA RTX Pro 6000 Blackwell is shipping, and it brings 96GB of GDDR7 ECC VRAM to a single workstation GPU. This means you can finally run 70B parameter models completely locally with room for massive context windows.
