  3. What http code should I be sending to crawlers to make them stop trying with the rest of their known database on my site?

    The guide covers installation, authentication, TLS encryption, and testing email delivery.

    Simple step-by-step instructions — useful for sysadmins and homelab users.

  11. Dear #mastoadmins, I'd like to improve the current setup using #caddy and #podman #compose. Is anyone using #podman #quadlet with #systemd? Also I understand that having the connection between caddy reverse proxy and mastodon via sockets is very cool and I'd like to give this a try as well.

    Systemd is now offering keeping podman quadlet containers up to date by itself. Maybe this one can be leveraged as well.

  12. If you're running any of our firewall scripts, you'll probably want to update them!

    They're all now reworked to keep their defined iptables chains attached to the top of the INPUT chain, to make sure default policies don't just override them. At least two of our servers had ended up not actually blocking IPs before this rewrite.

  13. I want to mention Continuwuity Matrix homeserver, which I've just installed to replace Synapse. It's still in beta, with v0.5 just released, but which does feel stable and quite close to production ready.
    Matrix is something I've wanted to get into, and a year or whatever ago, I tried Dendrite, but homeserver projects tend to get abandoned, so I ended up with Synapse anyway, like most people do. But then I didn't do anything with it.
    Continuwuity is written in Rust, and is a hard fork of a hard fork, and in active development. As a single user, I prefer something like this running, and hope to see this project evolve into its own thing, and be important.
    I think it's a project worth trying, or at least keeping an eye on.

  14. I was protecting myself and my Fediverse server from harm and preventing further harm. I told them that what they said hurts me and that I seek justice. Their gangs came in further to harass me and further defend their offensive and profane behaviour, challenging my dignity. I will never forget.

  15. My next goal is to maintain my Fediverse server for at least 24 hours. Achieving 24 hours of stable uptime on my self-hosted Fediverse server is the next milestone. This requires consistent monitoring and resource management, but it's a crucial step towards a reliable, humane online presence.

  16. Came across an e-mail server Mox by @mjl written in :golang: Any fediversians using it? :blobcatthinkowo:

    Must admit I've been using Exim and Postfix driven e-mail setups for more than two decades, therefore curious to explore a different server, which code I can actually read and understand well :ablobcatbongokeyboard:

    Will be setting up a machine to try Mox out :blobcatdonutnom:

  17. Apparently, the cutting-edge #Linux article you've yearned for is a masterclass in irony: a "403 Forbidden" 🛑 lesson on how #systemd restricts #daemons but, plot twist, it's the website that's actually restricted. Maybe the real daemon is the server admin who can't configure permissions. 🚫💻

    Way To The Web Ltd (aka ConfigServer) who provide the very useful and handy ConfigServer Firewall (csf) and many other products are closing down at the end of August - no updates/downloads will be available from that date.

  20. I am experiencing burnout solely because of trying to configure S3 in my Pixelfed admin panel, and I am a noob at S3 configuration. It feels like I don't know what to say to the panel, even though I have already paid for the object storage credits, and it is charging me hourly even though I don't have a bucket. I wish there were magic; I wish somebody could help me.

  21. Running e-mail servers is always fun: as the time came to renew TLS certificate on one machine doing e-mail transmission (SMTP), came to know TLSA records are now supposed to be 3 1 1 (no more 3 0 1) :blobcateyes:

    There is an added benefit of 3 (DANE-EE) 1 (subject public key) 1 (SHA2-256 hash digest) - if you do not rotate your private key to issue TLS certificate, you don't need to update the TLSA record - signature can be squeezed from key and certificate is not necessary at that point. If you do rotate private keys, this enables you to pre-create DNS records even before certificate is issued (given that you already generated keys) - that is really nice :blobcatthumbsup:

  22. At the first #software #company I worked at, we had a #server #administrator who named the servers after astrological signs. In my current company, I'm doing server administration, and I use names of gods from Greek mythology. Not because I'm interested in Greek mythology, but simply because I needed a quick naming scheme. I now want to switch to a new scheme. There are probably better/funnier naming schemes. What scheme do you use?

  23. Hey #email #nerds and #ServerAdmin people, I know about #DMARC, #SPF, and #DKIM and stuff. BUT.

    Idea: system where email servers generate a #GUID identifier for that specific email and keep it in a database. Other servers and email clients can then just ping the #domain that the email says its from and confirm the real domain sent it.

    Like, why couldn't this be a thing? Seems like it would completely stop those #spam emails that pretend to be from #PayPal or #banks.

  28. Hey there #Devops #serveradmin etc yous y'alls their

    is this nonsensical?

    ```
    rewrite ^(/127.0.0.1/)(\..*\.?.*)$ /wsldebian/$2;
    rewrite ^(/localhost/)(\..*\.?.*)$ /wsldebian/$2;
    ```

    noticed it in an old #nginx #conf file . i actually recall it working as desired. that is, it works. but... is that correct?

    seems too easy to be "correct"

  29. So, I'm considering taking some risks and leaning into setting up AD and domain on my home network, with my homelab.

    I'm concerned about what risks I should watch out for, and things I should keep in mind while setting it up and configuring it. My only hands on experience with setting that stuff up, was in a lab setting for one of my classes for school, and it was a very basic overview, and didn't cover the security risk side of things.

    I don't really have a huge need or reason to do this, largely just curious about the setup and management of a dozen or so computers on a small network like this.

    Also concerned about configuring my network shares for Android devices that exist on the network, that access the shares for media streaming as well.
