A short trip to the Dutch province of #Zeeland to be with the sea and to cut some #seaweed for kitchen experiments. We took part in a workshop and so were permitted to cut seaweed - not allowed otherwise, for good reason.
Some things we learned:
- Always greet the sea.
- Never pick, always cut, scissors are best. This preserves the holdfasts and allows the seaweed to regrow.
- Cut only from the top 25% of the seaweed for maximum regrowth.
- Cut off no more than one third of a piece of seaweed, again for regrowth.
- All seaweeds in the Netherlands are #edible.
- Seaweeds are family, treat them with respect. We ended up with a nice little treasure chest full of about a dozen species of seaweed. We've fried it, eaten it raw in various permutations, will dry some of it, and keep experimenting.
