“Part of Trump’s genius is being bad in so many ways that no particular way stands out and it seems like he must not be that bad.” #ScottAlexander https://www.astralcodexten.com/p/acx-endorses-harris-oliver-or-stein

"It took all the way until the turn of the Millennium before America listened to a Bush, and then got stuck wandering in a desert without an exit strategy."

Here's the best argument I've seen yet for letting GPs prescribe #ADHD meds without the psychiatric gatekeeping;
"A lot of studies in this area ask the kind of different question of whether children put on stimulants are more likely to be addicted to drugs in general as adults. Most of them find these children are less likely, which is hypothesized to be an effect of successfully treating their ADHD."

#ADHD isn't inability to concentrate. I don't mean, it isn't *just* that. I mean, that's not what it is *at all*.
"Height is biological! But that doesn’t mean the world is divided into two natural categories of 'healthy people' and 'people who have Height Deficiency Syndrome'. Attention is the same way. Some people really do have poor concentration, they suffer a lot from it, and it’s not their fault. They just don’t form a discrete population."

Interesting, thank you. Yes, it seems we mostly agree.
I had never considered unions in relationship with anti-trust. I guess there’s a good argument to be made about a handful of companies with deep pockets potentially having much greater power together than a heterogeneous mass of thousands or millions of workers, and that imbalance justifying anti-trust but not anti-union.
cf § 2.5: How do coordination problems justify labor unions and other labor regulation? on #ScottAlexander’s Non-Libertarian FAQ. His arguments seemed solid to me when I read that.

"The point of a money-laundering operation is to take in both fairly-earned and dirty money, then mix them together so thoroughly that nobody can tell which is which. Likewise, the point of a privilege-laundering operation is to take in both fairly-earned and dirty privilege, then stamp both with a Harvard degree." #ScottAlexander https://astralcodexten.substack.com/p/why-match-school-and-student-rank

The whole of #SlateStarCodex (#AstralCodexTen) summarised down to one paragraph by a redditor:
“Science is hard. Coordination is hard. Change is coming. Be kind to each other.”

You may have known him as a magician on America's Got Talent, or one of his many other TV appearances, but I just knew him as a dad of one of my kids' friends from school.

(najbardziej obrzydliwe wino jakie piłem to porto. Dostałem taką malutką buteleczkę w prezencie i przez kilka lat nie mogłem dokończyć. Smakowało jak rozpuszczalnik, a drogie było jak cholera.)

It feels great to stumble upon an #ACX post validating your own idea:
“I’m disappointed that no one has ever tried expanding the #QALY concept to things outside health care before. It’s not that I think it will work. It’s that I think it will fail to work in a different way than our naive opinions fail to work, and we might learn something from it.”

That seems embarrassing, and I’ve been hearing about the sclerosis of #SanFrancisco for a while, too.
But I feel that proving a non-libertarian wrong in the abstract is indeed very difficult: #ScottAlexander is not arguing that governments and public agencies are always everywhere better than the private sector at everything they set to do — he’s showing that they are not always_worse_. This is intuitively obvious; ie none of the two extremes (absolute statism or #anarchocapitalism) is desirable.
If you’re a moderate, a centrist, or even a #minarchist, this comes as no surprise — no matter how many outrageous pieces of evidence you can collect to illustrate that “the other side” is sometimes inefficient, expensive, or even harmful…

"There was no shortage of people willing to do righteous things, not now. Soon a persecution was on whose deranged fervour made the Salem Witch Trials look like the ACLU. The combination of many well-meaning but unexperienced people trying to do good, and set up charities, plus a giant witch hunt for people trying to fake doing good and fake charities, went exactly as well as you might expect. Vigilante justice was served.

"If he sent her off, sooner or later she would try something innocuous-looking and make all the rivers of the world run uphill again. Or boil the oceans. Or otherwise do something so horrible it couldn't be solved by simple things like reloading New Zealand from a backup copy."

Man, do I love #StevenPinker…
“A typical essay by #ScottAlexander is deeper, better reasoned, better referenced, more original, and wittier than 99% of the opinion pieces in #MSM. It's sad that the #NYT can see him only through the lens of their standard political & cultural obsessions.”

"...the realistic alternative to meat eating is not a better life but for those animals to not exist in the first place."
- #ScottAlexander
https://slatestarcodex.com/2019/12/11/acc-is-eating-meat-a-net-harm/I wonder if Scott realizes this sounds an awful lot like one of the justifications for human slavery? I call false dichotomy. Without farming of non-human animals for human food, our food production would take up a fraction of the land it does now, and the balance could be rewilded to support larger population of free non-humans.
