My tentative understanding is that 'extension' refers metrical prolongation, as in the lengthening of a note or chord, whereas, 'expansion' refers to harmonic prolongation through like a neighboring chord. Is this right? #musicTheory #musicAnalysis #schenkerianAnalysis #classicalMusic

Music theory nerds in my phone, is there a difference between 'extension' and 'expansion'?

I'm seeing both of these terms in analysis textbooks, sometimes used within the same paragraph, and it still isn't clear to me if they're synonymous or describing different techniques.
