The U.S. has a long, dark history of deploying troops to attack #protestors that dates back to the 19th century. What can we learn from it to counter #Trump’s latest attacks?

"On Saturday evening, Donald Trump announced that he was deploying 2,000 California National Guard troops to quell anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles. He did so using a rarely used law that allows the president to take control of a National Guard if there is a “a rebellion or danger of a rebellion against the authority of the Government of the United States.” This is against the wishes of Governor Gavin Newsom, who has said that the troops will only inflame tensions. Protests continued throughout Sunday night and seem likely to escalate on Monday.

"This is a calculated attempt by the Trump administration to provoke a conflict. They hope to show cities in chaos in order to justify accelerating 'deportations.' Even though deportations remain stubbornly popular, approval over their methods is slipping, and the images of ICE agents raiding restaurants, immigration hearings, and schools undercuts the narrative about deporting criminals. #StephenMiller is reportedly angry at the 'slow' pace of arresting immigrants without due process and sending them off to brutal prison camps in foreign countries to which they have no association, like El Salvador, Libya, and South Sudan, and wants to speed them up to reach a quota of 3,000 a day. But to do that, they need to demonstrate greater urgency. They likely picked California because of the state’s size and prominence, and to undercut any attempt at states bucking or resisting immigration enforcement.

"This is an incredibly worrying step in the country’s march toward authoritarianism. The fact that the police are shooting rubber bullets at reporters is equally disturbing, as it seems clear that law enforcement will side with the federal authorities. We can’t rest complacently and assume that 'it can’t happen here.' It can and it is. And U.S. history offers plenty of past examples, with state militia and federal troops having been deployed against protesters as early as the 19th century. Back then, both were used to put down labor disputes and force striking workers back to work. Major strikes such as the #StrikeOf1877, the #GreatSouthwestStrike of 1886, and the #PullmanStrike in 1894 all ended by either federal troops’ or state militias’ force.

"At the turn of the 20th century came the massacres of African Americans. In 1917, strikes and labor disputes in East St. Louis, Illinois, erupted into one of the most violent race riots in U.S. history. African Americans fought back against white attackers, and the Illinois National Guard was called in to restore peace—but they chose in most cases to join in on the attacks or at the least, just stood back and allowed them to happen. Anywhere between 40 and 150 Black people died, and thousands more were left homeless. During the #TulsaMassacre in 1921, the Oklahoma National Guard disarmed Black citizens trying to defend themselves and marched them into detention camps, even after white rioters had commandeered planes from the local airfield and dropped bombs on their homes—an unprecedented act."

An article by Indian writer Riya Chakraborty mentions that there is a misunderstanding among the Indian Hindu community regarding what Bangladeshi Hindus want for Bangladesh and how they envision the country.

In the influential newspaper *The Indian Express*, Riya Chakraborty, a resident of West Bengal, attempts to shed light on the stance of Bangladeshi Hindus.

She writes that on August 5th, when Sheikh Hasina was forced to resign, two thoughts crossed her mind. First, she felt happy about the success of the student movement. Second, she feared that Hindus in Bangladesh might face persecution.

At that time, she started receiving reports that after Sheikh Hasina fled, attacks on Hindus were occurring in Bangladesh.

However, in reality, Bangladeshis began guarding Hindu temples, Christian churches, and other minority places of worship. This was reminiscent of how people stood shoulder to shoulder in 1971 during the liberation of Bangladesh. Once again, they were working together in the same spirit.

What Were Indian Hindus Doing?

The author notes that after Hasina's downfall, Indian Hindus did not even take the time to listen to what Bangladeshi Hindus were doing or saying. Some Indian Hindus even started claiming that only Hasina could guarantee the survival of Hindus in Bangladesh. Some went further, arguing that Bangladesh needs an authoritarian leader like Hasina.

In reality, however, the revolution against tyranny in Bangladesh saw hundreds of Hindus join and many sacrificing their lives. This was similar to their participation in the Language Movement, the Six-Point Movement, the 1971 War of Independence, and the fight for secular democracy.

Despite this, Indian and diaspora Hindus continued to speak of saving Bangladeshi Hindus from genocide. Some extremists even used AI to create fake images of dead Hindus, demanding global Hindu intervention.

She also writes that there is no real presence of extremist Hindus in the Bengali community; they are detached from reality. Yet, they continue to portray Sheikh Hasina as the only savior against the so-called genocide of Bangladeshi Hindus.

Additionally, many on Twitter compared Bangladesh's interim government leader, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, to Myanmar's Aung San Suu Kyi, despite the fact that Suu Kyi allied with the military to oppress minorities, whereas Dr. Yunus stands firmly against minority persecution.

The author calls on Indian Hindus to learn about the actual situation facing Hindus in Bangladesh and speak up accordingly. She argues that false and misleading information is distancing the truth of what Bangladeshi Hindus truly want and is weakening them further. The misinformation spread by Indian Hindus is being dismissed as foreign propaganda.

She further urges Indian Hindus to listen to the structural changes that Bangladeshi Hindus are demanding from the Bangladeshi government.

In conclusion, she emphasizes that Bangladeshi Hindus are not helpless. They are not asking for any foreign power to save them. They do not want another authoritarian regime like Hasina’s to govern Bangladesh, and they certainly do not wish to leave their homeland.

What Bangladeshi Hindus truly need is an inclusive, secular, and democratic Bangladesh where everyone’s rights are respected.

According to Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam, India, no Hindus from Bangladesh have entered India. The Chief Minister stated in Silchar that "in the past month, we have not been able to identify a single Hindu who has crossed the border; however, last month we arrested 35 Muslim infiltrators. Recently, we apprehended two individuals from Karimganj and sent them back to Bangladesh."

He further mentioned that there are no records of Hindus entering Assam from Bangladesh. Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed, "Hindus from Bangladesh are only requesting Prime Minister Narendra Modi to pressure the Bangladesh government to ensure their safety."

Earlier, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Chief Minister stated that the Assam Police had detained two Bangladeshi nationals at the Badarpur railway station. In his post, he mentioned, "Two Bangladeshi nationals have been apprehended at Badarpur railway station. They are Masum Khan and Sonia Akhtar from the Modelganj police precinct in Bangladesh. They reportedly entered India via the Madhupur (BD)-Agartala route and were heading to Bengaluru. With the help of the BSF, the Assam Police have sent them back across the border."
