Working in the #SaltMine has been OK. My time allocation is still a little screwed up, as the project with the smallest allocation is the one I have the most to do on. Working on multiple projects is nice, but it can get confusing when you’re trying to figure out which project to work on and how to charge for it. But I do like working on multiple things at once.

It’s been a busy but satisfying week in the #SaltMine. I have had some interesting projects to work on, and a friend started work this week, too. I think he will enjoy STR. I even got to do one of my favorite things: closely examine and critique C++ code. I actually enjoy waiting through warnings and seeing how appropriate they are. I love reading code almost as much as I love writing it.

Phew! That was a hard day in the #SaltMine! I can tell because my shoulders are sore from being hunched over the keyboard all day. I even took the dogs for walkies! We are splurging on a G&T tonight. We don't usually indulge on a Tuesday, but G. had yesterday off, so this is like a Monday in some ways, but better.

The actual work in the #SaltMine has been going pretty well. It’s been nice focusing on a single project. I need to get my feature merged in. It has been eye-opening to learn how to transfer data and programs to the classified lab. It can be a tedious process, indeed. No matter how much you try to emulate things on the “low“ side, you always run into a weird twist.
-
I have been coming into the #SaltMine much more these days, because I have to go into the classified lab. I think I have to average at least two days a week in the office before I can get my own assigned office. The only reason why I would like that to happen is that it can be very disorienting to go to a different office every time I go in. Takes me half a day to figure out where I am and how to get to the kitchen.
-
I really need to finish up my little project in the #SaltMine. I was all set to do it yesterday, but they updated the database schema on me, and it took me all day to recover from that change. It also means I probably need to restart the process of submitting my Docker container for transfer to the classified lab. Seeing as they haven’t even done the one I submitted a few days ago, it sure is a long process.
-
I really need to get my act together in the #SaltMine. I’ve been puttering about way too much in the code, and it’s time to pull the trigger on something and get it delivered. I especially need to get some code folded in so I can get it “high side". That’s what they call it when you transfer to the classified system. It’s a pretty tedious process, taking at least a couple of days to get everything approved and copied over. It has been an eye-opening experience.
-
I am debating skipping out on a day or two at the #SaltMine because the weather looks great and we didn’t get much done outside over the weekend. A friend of mine is starting at STR soon. I’ve been trying to get him on board for a couple of years now. I’m excited for three reasons – he’s a really good developer, I get a hefty bonus for referring him, and now I can stop listening to him whine about his job at Amazon. 😸
-
So no visit to the #SaltMine today. I had a pretty busy day yesterday. I should get a new transfer request to the classified lab before I leave this morning, so I can have it ready for me on Monday. I was able to use some other resources to simulate a standalone machine, and I think I’m ready for the classified lab.
-
I will spend my day in the #SaltMine at the world headquarters here in Woburn. I would come in more often, but there aren’t enough hoteling spaces, though. For instance, I can’t get one on Thursday. Because I am going into the classified lab more often these days, I might be able to get my own office—or at least my own desk. The threshold is rather low at only two days a week. But I’m not sure when the next assignment phase will be.
-
So I came into the #SaltMine for a free lunch and a free slice of pie. I am also beginning my journey into a classified lab. We have a couple of them here at STR world headquarters, and my new project is partially classified. It is completely air gapped. You have to take off everything with connectivity, so that means no watch, no phone, and even no car keys. I’ll have to get a normal watch to wear, since I kept checking my wrist for the time.
-
So it is back to the #SaltMine today. I should be able to do everything because I can stay focused, thanks to a couple of very clear objectives I need to wrap up. That at least helps with the distractions. I have been gradually improving CVE detection and have a few more ideas. I think it’s better to have a false positive than to miss it entirely, so that’s the way I’m progressing.
-
I am just about done writing up my report in the #SaltMine. We have only been finding 6 out of a potential 40+ CVEs in the source code, and I have a theory why. I want to toss that out there to the team and see what they think we can do about it. I think there might be an easy fix if we’re willing to be too aggressive instead of too conservative.
-
As I said, I am back at world headquarters for the #SaltMine. It is for a good reason, though. I am getting another free lunch. And we are going to play some #BoardGames too. I brought Take Five and a couple of Mystery Rummy games. I got access to a secret lab yesterday, and I will go down and try to log in today.

As I said, I am in person at the #SaltMine today. It really is incredible how brazen the Orange Turd and his minions are in using all the levers of the most powerful government in history for every petty little grievance. It's a good thing Congress isn’t alive to see this. His fight against Anthropic actually has a strong effect here, because it is one of our most used AI code agents, and as a government contractor, we won’t be able to use it if he continues his petty tirade.
-
I meant to put a few hours in at the #SaltMine over the weekend, but I never got around to it. I want to finish up my ground truth task. I need to finalize the script and try to fold it into a GitLab CI job. I was hoping to get some feedback from the team, but I haven’t seen anything yet. Only finding six out of 48 CVE’s in the curl code isn’t great.
-
I had a pretty good day in the #SaltMine yesterday. It was rather short, so maybe that’s why I enjoyed it. But I got a lot done in a short period, including making real progress on my test suite. I am hoping to have enough pulled together to give another demo tomorrow, showing how we can prove a ground truth for whatever that means, but I need to get my other task review to see how that code looks, too.
-
Still just grinding it out at the #SaltMine. At my demo the other day, they kept harping on “ground truth“. Which feels to me like one of those phrases people say, even though they’re not sure what it means, so it’s really been bugging me. Basically, I am just trying to put together a test suite for my little task here. I’m also just about ready to show my other task off to the rest of the team.
-
I did another demo in the #SaltMine, and it went OK. I have been doing what I’ve been asked to do, but they always seem to want a little bit more. I should’ve taken more notes. And my other task is just about done. I added another small feature, and I hope they don’t mind. I am piggybacking on that merge request to do it. Sometimes, they can get a little touchy if you expand on the scope of an MR.
-
It will be just another day in the #SaltMine. I am have a demo of one of my tasks, and I still need to finish writing the test suite for the other one. So I actually have some pretty focused things to work on, which will be good. I’ll probably need to put on headphones to avoid distractions from the rest of the crew here. I will share my programming playlist. It’s mostly electronica, with no vocals to distract me.

I finally finished my task for one of the projects this morning in the #SaltMine. I will demo it on Monday, and hopefully, this demo will go better than my previous ones. Now I need to tackle the other task: writing test suites for the new code I wrote.
-
I have been really busy in the #SaltMine. I’ve been juggling two different tasks, one of which has serious time pressures, but I’m waiting on other people to finish things up before I can do much on it. My new project should finally start up next week. It’s a classified project, so I will probably have to go into the office a few more times than normal. Not a big deal.
-
But no, I have to go to the #SaltMine instead. I'm still in kind of a limbo there. I have a couple of pressing issues to work on, but I’m waiting for contributions from others, and I don’t see anything else I can do until I get them. It is more than a little frustrating. Especially because I can’t even build the software without their help. Oh well, I’ll keep chipping away at the edge cases while I wait.
-
After a kind of weird week in the #SaltMine, I had a good day working at the keyboard. I was able to get a long-standing issue cleared up. I now only have to make sure I get the testing right, but it’ll be good to share that code on Monday. I am going to take the day off, but I should put in a couple of hours anyway.
-
Working in the #SaltMine has been weird the past couple of days. After I finished my last demo, which I thought went pretty well, I got moved off that project, but didn’t get moved onto a new one. I think I just fell through the cracks. I did talk with my team lead yesterday, so hopefully we can figure out what’s next. I worked on a small issue and would like to fold it into the main project today.
-
As I said, I am staying out of the #SaltMine today. I have another demo to give tomorrow morning, but it still doesn’t quite do what I wanted. I ran into a roadblock with one of the tools. I have a pretty simple workaround, but it is frustrating I can’t get it to do what it is supposed to do. I might spend some time trying to fix it myself, but it’s deep into serious C++ parsing.
-
It has been both frustrating and enlightening in the #SaltMine recently. I have been busy getting some things done, but mostly trying to work around other problems, which is why there's been frustration. I could probably finish this if everything were working as it should. I am going to see if I can tie things up today, and hope some of these problems get fixed soon.
-
I’m busier than a cross-eyed rooster on an ant hill in the #SaltMine. I had a big demo on Monday afternoon, although I wasn’t able to get it completely in shape by then. But when the project lead asked me yesterday morning how soon I would be able to finish it, I was pleased to tell him it was already done. That’s how close I was. Still looking for a better test case, but at least the technology mix is proving to work.
-
I headed into the very maw of the #SaltMine today. They can all too easily lure me in with the promise of a free lunch, even if it does mean a group All Hands meeting afterwards. You can call me #OfficeBoy.
Oh, coffee is ready. I don't think anyone else on this floor makes the pot of coffee around here, as the grounds in the maker don't look like they've been changed since I was here last week.

It's also been a busy few days in the #SaltMine. As my grandfather used to say, "Busier than a cross-eyed rooster on an ant hill". Trying to add some reporting to our web app. Spent way too much time trying to figure out why I was getting asked to log in to #SSRS. Turns out it wasn't completely installed (missing its database). So frustrating. But I made good progress after that.

The only meeting more pointless and annoying that the "Sprint" kickoff meeting, is the mid-"Sprint" update meeting. It's esp. pointless because we just had a standup an hour ago, which should have covered all this. Sigh. #ShootMeNow #AmMeeting #saltmine
