A virginal Salome!

It does contain a few scribbles in the list of roles from 1913, but the rest of the pages are completely free of annotations!
I tried desperately to find a score without the clutter of the English version in it. There are also small additional notes for the differing rhythms. That’s very confusing to work with!

I went back and forth on whether I should write into it, and decided not to. I’m having a copy made to work with instead!

Blick in den Abgrund – „Salome“ im Theater Hagen

Was war das gestern im Theater Hagen? Mit ein wenig zeitlichem Abstand komme ich zum Schluss, dass dies wohl die eindringlichste und schonungsloseste Inszenierung von Richard Strauss‘ Oper SALOME war, die ich bisher erlebt habe. Regisseurin Noa Naamat nimmt uns mit in eine Welt voller Dekadenz, Abgründen, Begierden und sexuellem Missbrauch. Salome, die zusammen mit ihrer Mutter Herodias im Hause ihres Stiefvaters Herodes lebt und gleichzeitig das Objekt seiner sexuellen Begierde ist. Salome erkennt, dass sie Ihre vermeintliche erotische Anziehungskraft, die sie auf Männer ausübt, letztlich gegen ihren Peiniger einsetzen muss um sich ihm entledigen zu können. In Hagen wird der Tanz der sieben Schleier viel mehr zu einem Tanz der Symbole. Symbole für sexuellen Übergriff seitens des Stiefvaters an seiner Stieftochter. Sie fordert für den ersehnten Tanz den Kopf des Jochanaan. Den gefürchteten Feind des Herodes, den dieser in einem Verlies gefangen hält. Der Tod Jochanaans birgt für Herodes ein nicht zu kalkulierendes Risiko. Naamat verlegt die Handlung in ein abgestürztes Flugzeugwrack – einem vermutlichen Privatjet -, umgeben von einer dunklen, unwirtlichen Einöde, wo die Sonne nicht scheint und wo nichts blüht. Wo die handelnden Personen ziellos und verängstigt, teils schuldbeladen, herumirren und sich ihrer totalen Abhängigkeit von Herodes bewusst sind und werden. Herodes, der in seiner zügellosen Sexsucht alles und jeden unterordnet, muss am Ende erkennen, dass er von allen verlassen und von der Stieftochter zutiefst verspottet, alles verloren hat. Salome wird auch in der Hagener Inszenierung am Ende getötet, nimmt aber alle mit in den Tod, indem sie mit letzter Kraft Feuer legt. Eine Inszenierung, die lange nachklingt und die, ich gebe es gern zu, auch einen gewissen zeitlichen Abstand zum Erfassen all ihrer Aussagen benötigt. Dann aber sind diese gewaltig. Petite peinture avec (encore) le thème de Salomé et JB. Remarquez que la tête coupée est démesurée en rapport avec la taille de la femme. J'aurais donc pu l'intituler "Salomé et Goliath" (quelle idée amusante de mélanger des thèmes différents du genre "le martyre de la Joconde" ou "La vierge luttant avec un centaure" (oui bon bref...)).

Next year at the end of January we are going to present our production of Salome at the Staatstheater Darmstadt. Kerem Hillel, who staged Felix Weingartner’s Kain und Abel in Darmstadt with me in the role of Ada just a few months ago, will be the director of my Salome! Both Noa and Kerem hail from Israel, and I am super curious to see both their different takes on this opera by the very German Richard Strauss!

On my way to the dress rehearsal of Noa Naamat’s staging of Salome in Hagen!!

(I can’t go to the premiere on Saturday, since I’m singing in Poppea in Darmstadt.) Noa and I have been friends ever since she directed Aida in Darmstadt. She is an amazing director, and a wonderful human being!

When I made plans to see Noa’s Salome, I didn’t know yet that I would get the chance to sing the role myself the next season. Now it’s a work trip: I’m preparing the role!
