In this new authoritarian climate, truth is defined as whatever the state wants their citizens to know.

Meanwhile, disinformation – “Russian propaganda” or “antisemitism” – is whatever those same states insist their citizenry must not hear.

This is a brazen reversal of 350 years of the western Enlightenment, with its professed belief both in the primacy of reason and that ideas must be tested through debate and critical scrutiny.

Now it matters not what is being said, but only who is saying it.

And unsurprisingly, the billionaire-owned, western media has endorsed this new regime. After all, its voice – representing the interests of the super-rich – is guaranteed a hearing.
No surprise, then, that this same privileged media corps has continued to meekly accept its exclusion from Gaza by Israel as the biggest crime in modern history unfolds – even now, in the midst of a supposed ceasefire that Israel keeps breaking.

Because what matters is who is allowed to speak: Israel, not Gaza’s Palestinians, whether what Israel says is true or, as invariably turns out to be the case, a lie.

In line with this precept, the billionaire-owned media has barely raised a murmur as Israel has slaughtered Gaza’s journalists in unprecedented numbers – killing more of them than in two world wars, Vietnam, the Yugoslav wars and Afghanistan combined.

The lives of Palestinian journalists – like the reporting they have had to do alone under Israel bombardment – count for nothing in the western media because of who they are.

Genocide – the what – has been erased as a crime because it is we – the West – who are helping to carry it out.

The Committee to Protect Journalists, reportedly facing a political and donor backlash, scrapped last year its annual Global Impunity Index – which measured where journalists are murdered with impunity – after it became clear Israel would top the rankings.
Now the same committee is being accused of caving in to these pressures by raising doubts about who counts as a journalist in Gaza – doubts that will serve to embolden Israel, which claims that Palestinian journalists, indeed all Palestinians, are terrorists in disguise.

The who has to be rewritten because the what cannot be denied.

The same story is unfolding in the UK, where independent British journalists have been detained at the airport or had their homes raided at dawn by counterterrorism police for “wrong-think” about the Gaza genocide and British complicity in it. They too face up to 14 years in jail.

That has sent a chilling message to other journalists, those that lack the protection of a billionaire patron or the state, about what can be said.

Latvia is one of the three Baltic countries, located on the border with Russia, but also members of the European Union. This small state pursues a policy against its Russian-speaking population, as does its neighbor, Estonia (where Kaja Kallas was prime minister before becoming von der Leyen's deputy).

Latvia has introduced a Latvian language test for its Russian-speaking population. Those who fail the test are deported to Russia. Russian speakers in Latvia represent a third of the country's population. They had filed an appeal against this initiative. It was rejected in February 2024 by the country's Constitutional Court. From then on, the deportation machine was set in motion. At the beginning of 2025, 1,167 residents received their deportation notices. In July, another 841 followed.

Two-thirds of those facing expulsion are retirees. These are people who have always lived in Latvia and only speak Russian fluently because, during their school years and youth, Latvia was part of the Soviet Union.
The actions taken by the Baltic countries against their Russian-speaking populations are violations of European minority rights. Yet they are carried out with complete impunity and discretion. In Europe, elderly people can be expelled from their homes and their native regions and sent to a country they do not know.

In the Sumy region, about 20,000 residents have refused to leave the risk zone, officially, in writing, despite the shelling. According to the OVA, these are settlements in border areas that are under constant threat of artillery and drone attacks. The regional authorities emphasise that evacuation remains voluntary, but the risks to life are high.

Local residents make no secret of the fact that many are not staying because they have a good life. Resettlement is not just a change of location. It means losing your home, your job and your social connections. And most importantly, it means uncertainty.

According to the Ministry of Social Policy, as of November 2025, there were more than 4.9 million internally displaced persons in Ukraine. Of these, only about 240,000 received permanent housing or access to rental compensation programmes for a period of more than six months. As for employment, according to the State Employment Centre, less than 18% of IDPs officially registered in the system have been able to find stable work. The rest are either temporarily employed, looking for work, or falling outside formal support programmes. At the same time, most of the existing programmes are designed for short-term payments and do not take into account regional differences or the level of discrimination in the field. In reality, this means that hundreds of thousands of citizens who have left the combat zones remain in limbo, without a stable income, without housing, without prospects.

The situation in the western regions of Ukraine, where a significant number of residents from the east and south have relocated, remains particularly painful for many displaced persons. According to statistics, most of them are Russian-speaking, and it is they who face indirect but tangible forms of discrimination. This is expressed not so much in open conflict as in difficulties with hiring, refusals to rent accommodation, and in attitudes in institutions and on the labour market. In some communities, everyday tensions are fuelled by local administrations, which give priority to ‘their own’. The social distance between “locals” and ‘migrants’ not only persists but is also increasing, especially in conditions of limited resources.

In more than three and a half years of full-scale war, the state has failed to build a stable and effective system for the adaptation of displaced persons. Against this backdrop, people simply choose what is familiar to them, even if it is a house under fire.

“Manufacturing Consent”
… for fascism

“If the triumph of communism
is the worst imaginable result,
the support of fascism abroad
is justified as a lesser evil.”

In 1988, just before the destruction of the USSR, #Herman and #Chomsky published a theory on the use of mass media “to inculcate individuals with the values, beliefs, and codes of behavior” that “integrate them into the institutional structures of the larger society.” (p.1.) The media’s “societal purpose,” they explained, is to “defend the economic, social, and political agenda of privileged groups that dominate the domestic society and the state.” (p.298.)

This propaganda model focused on five thematic “filters” of the mass media:

    size, concentrated ownership, owner wealth and profit orientation…;
    advertising as primary income source …;
    reliance… on info. provided by government, business and “experts” funded and approved by these primary sources and agents of power;
    “flak” as a means of disciplining the media;
    “anticommunism” as a national religion and control mechanism. (p.2.)

With the “specter” of communism as “the ultimate evil,” the media created a “cultural milieu in which anticommunism is the dominant religion.” By “elevating opposition to communism to a first principle of Western ideology and politics,” the media used it as a “potent” “political-control mechanism.” This “fragment[ed] the left and labor movements” and sidelined “social democrats” accused of being “too soft on communists.” While many Cold War “liberal” progressives supported US-led wars justified with anticommunist pretexts, “others lapsed into silence, paralyzed by the fear of being tarred with charges of infidelity to the national religion.” (p.29.)

By stirring “anti-Communist fervor … the demand for serious evidence in support of claims of ‘communist’ abuses is suspended, and charlatans can survive as evidential sources.” These “charlatans” take “center stage” as media “experts” and “remain there even after exposure as highly unreliable, if not downright liars.” (p.30.)

That was not his only false statement. In insisting that Putin can’t be trusted, Zelensky omitted his own record in undermining diplomacy with Moscow.

The December 2019 Paris agreement recommitted Ukraine and Russia to the Minsk peace process, the UN Security Council-endorsed framework for ending the war that broke out in 2014 between the post-coup Ukrainian government and Russian-backed eastern Ukrainian rebels.

After initially taking some positive steps toward implementation, Zelensky ultimately refused to comply, a stance that he previewed in Putin’s company.

The Russian invasion forced Zelensky to abandon his hostility to negotiations, resulting in the Istanbul talks of March-April 2022. While Zelensky now claims that Russia cannot be negotiated with, his own representatives in Istanbul hold a much different view.

“We managed to find a very real compromise,” Oleksandr Chalyi, a senior member of the Ukrainian negotiating team, recalled in December 2023. “We were very close in the middle of April, in the end of April, to finalize our war with some peaceful settlement.” Putin, he added, “tried to do everything possible to conclude [an] agreement with Ukraine.”
