  1. Leaving Sydney after a great few days at #RubyConfAU! It's always a pleasure to meet new Ruby friends and re-meet existing ones. Plus we had two days of great content & a pre-conference unconference run by @timriley to boot!

  2. After great presentations around #rubyconfau on both Hanami and Hotwire, I wondered how well they both go together. Especially as hotwire claims to be framework agnositic.

This 2022 article from Paweł Świątkowski unpacked that they go together pretty well.

  4. In happier news via #RubyConfAU: Rails Camp in Australia is following Aotearoa's lead with a name change to Ruby Retreat, and will be happening in October! 🎉 Can't wait!

  6. And there was also a phone call from an AI-generated voice imitation of Matz. The fact that it was AI-generated was made clear from the get-go - but still, it makes me feel uneasy.

Was Matz even asked if this was okay? 😓 #RubyConfAU

  8. Not thrilled that #RubyConfAU closed with a (sales-pitch-ish) talk on AI.

I appreciate that it acknowledged the growing risk of deepfake issues… but very disappointed there was no reference to environmental issues, nor the systemic biases/bigotry in training data.

The brief note on not wanting to take peoples’ jobs away was followed by how to reduce workloads in call centres. Those two items _can_ sit together, but I worry that the first statement was actually limited to developer jobs.

  10. The very familiar Chris Oliver from GoRails fame takes us through how they built out a well considered notification system, that’s available now in a Jumpstart Rails. We might just be seeing more of it come Rails 8 too.

  14. @eighthave @sovtechfund

Great discussion on this at #rubyconfau yesterday.

Useful to distinguish types of contributors:
    - Funded corporate contributors (mostly working don’t need funding)
    - Tiny/new experimental/toy project makers (funding is not yet a goal or priority)
    - Self funded contributors who start to wear an ongoing support workload (this is the focus group)

Its self funded maintainers that start to carry this burden of support are the ones to help fund.

  16. It’s @elle exposing anti-patterns in Rails.

Elle knows what we’ve all been up to 😉, and with much generosity brings tips to brush our apps off and make everything better.

Why? Maybe just because but also to teach us all a little more about Ruby.

  28. Last year I spoke at #RubyConfAU and recommended folks join Professionals Australia. It's not obvious given the name, but they are the union in Australia that represents and supports tech workers (amongst others):
    professionalsaustralia.org.au

Had a chat with someone today in the lead-up to this year's conference, and they were telling me they joined because of my talk, and have since found the support from Professionals Australia to be very useful. 🙌🏻

  30. Any friends in Sydney - whether you're attending #RubyConfAU or not: I'm going to get my usual pre-conf gelato 🍦 late this afternoon. 4:45pm at Rivareno Barangaroo, for maybe 40 minutes before continuing on to the official conference opening party.

Give me a shout if you're likely to join me ☺️ (and sorry for the late notice)

  34. Heading to Sydney for #RubyConfAU after many years away.

Looking forward to catching up with folks and also introducing ppl to @moxvallix as it’s their first RubyConf.

That and just geeking out and talking tech for a bunch of days with some good folk.

  39. Honestly, I am LOVING the way that #hanami gives us a palette, it hands us the ability to think about modularity, comparability and ultimately the power to design our applications to suit our unique domains - it’s so fun! The future of this framework is bright! Thanks @timriley for such an exciting presentation! #rubyconfau
