Pretty sure I found a bug in #rsyslog . Withlibyaml-devinstalled and having built version 8.2606.0, it was spinning constantly like this:7355.017899008:imjournal.c : operatingstate.c: osf: MSG imjournal: journal files changed, reloading... : signaling new internal message via SIGTTOU: 'imjournal: journal files changed, reloading... [v8.2606.0 try https://www.rsyslog.com/e/0 ]' 7355.017963439:main thread : ratelimit.c: message discarded by ratelimiting 7355.017973909:imjournal.c : imjournal.c: sd_journal_next did not move cursor, skipping message
Uninstalling that library and building 8.2604.0 fixed it. #Linux -

The best thing about #AI in software development is that you can see easier now which piece of software to avoid.
Next candidate is #rsyslog:

Looking into #syslog server implementations, trying to decide if I should go with #rsyslog or #syslog-ng. Apparently the maintainer (!) of rsyslog is a slop coder (see https://github.com/rsyslog/rsyslog/pull/6328). Might want to avoid rsyslog in the future, I definitely will.

If you're bored of managing your #opensource project you could also try to find new maintainers.
If you don't like to code any longer just don't do it.
What's the point, honestly
I "get it" for corporations, Microsoft, Oracle, etc they didn't do anything for the love of the craft. But why the fuck would you do this for what is supposed to be your passion project? Just... Stop doing it, find something else that makes you happy.

Oh gods, I missed that #rsyslog went full in on AI slopping themselves. Is there an alternative fork now?

Protip: if you’re running
rsyslog, restart it frequently. It was holding 25G of my/varhostage until I restarted it.(alternately swap to something that isn’t brain-dead.)

@tanepiper @davidgerard @baldur Sort of building evidence that rsyslog is an ever-increasing liability in distributions and organisations.

Explain it to me like I'm 5... why does a syslog service need to be "AI first"?

So here we go, #systemd haters. Here's your trusty legacy tech going all in on reliable, comprehensible code!

rsyslog, up to now a crucial security tool, is on track for a series of vulnerabilities and lost functionality:

把 rsyslog 訊息串到 Slack 與 Pushover 上
把之前想弄的東西弄出來了,直接在 rsyslog 上設定條件,然後串到 Slack 以及 Pushover 上。 rsyslog 這邊有不少眉眉角角要處理,本來查到 omhttp,想直接透過 omhttp 打到 HTTPS endpoint,但發現 omhttp 沒有也沒打算包進標準套件裡面 (因為不是由官方開發的),但文件上面有... 在 2018 年的「rsyslogd: could not load module 'omhttp' #3302」這邊就有提到這個問題了: Sadly, the omhttp module is currently not part of the def…

And now I have @pushover working with #rsyslog!
I've just got very basic alerts at the moment: anything "err" or worse gets sent to me, with no filtering. I'm guessing the timestamp is wrong because there's no RTC attached to this RPi3 (a tempting upgrade!), so it probably hasn't sync'd with an NTP server at this point.
RAM usage (including ramdisk) is now between 480 and 520 MB.

От логов к аудиту
Статья родилась, как водится, из рабочей задачи — нужно было внедрить аудит-логирование в некоторые микросервисы на Java и Spring.

After migrating most workloads to Kubernetes, I've learned that syslog peace is excluding pretty much every Kubernetes error message I don't understand 🙂

@rafaelcaricio central syslog server (#rsyslog or #syslog_ng) is usually enough for my side gigs. If any interface is really needed I go and push from that central server directly to #elasticsearch and spin #kibana on top (if I already have #grafana in place, for example for metrics, I might skip Kibana entirely). Works like a charm 👌🏻

Rsyslog and Docker
Few years ago I decided to write my own hadret.rsyslog Ansible role. I had two main goals in mind while writing it — first, I wanted to have a turn-key remote logging support, and second, I [...]
