FIRE CHIEF CLOSES HAZARDOUS HIKING AREAS THROUGHOUT RIVERSIDE COUNTY

    RELEASE DATE: April 29, 2026
PERRIS, CA – CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire Chief Robert Fish recently received
approval from the Riverside County Board of Supervisors to close six hazardous hiking areas throughout the region effective May 1, 2026. The closures will remain in effect until further notice in the following areas:

    • Eagle Canyon/Tin Mine (east of Corona)
    • Steel Peak (north of Lake Elsinore)
    • Bautista Canyon (southeast of Hemet)
    • North Mountain and Indian Canyon (south of Banning, north of San Jacinto)
    • Ramona Bowl (south of Hemet) *Open daily from sunrise until 12:00 P.M.

“The proactive measure of temporarily closing these hiking areas is being implemented to protect residents, visitors, and first responders, and to reduce the likelihood of wildfire incidents that could threaten surrounding communities,” stated Fire Chief Fish.

  2. Both of these zones are still Evacuation Orders, but you'll see they built a new zone for the homes ("A") and a zone where the fire is ("B"). This means they are thinking about (but have not yet approved/issued) letting people back into their homes, probably later today. They are manually changing their zone boundaries now. I suspect they'll announce things either at the morning briefing or afternoon briefing, depending on how concerned they are about wind and weather this afternoon. #SpringsFire #RivCo #CAwx #wildfires
