Richard Dadd’s painting ‘The Faerie Feller’s Master Stroke’ always fascinated me. The chaos & darkness lurking inside its apparent whimsicality is absolutely terrifying - especially knowing Dadd painted it in Bedlam after murdering his father in the grip of hellish delusions. But it is also full of hope in the power of art to keep the chaos at bay, even if only while you keep painting.

If I were making films (I studied film-making at art school but did not go into it as a career) and had funding, one of my projects would be a biopic of Richard Dadd. I have been fortunate enough to see many of his works in the flesh and his life-story was tragic, brutal and fascinating.
