  1. We rewatched those Bank Holiday classics, The Guns of Navarone and Where Eagles Dare. Not masterpieces, but do they manage what they set out to do? Find out what @lordof1 and I thought in #RibbonOfMemes ribbonofmemes.org.uk/archive/2 #Podcast #Film #Movies

  2. Is 1959's Anatony of a Murder prurient or necessary? Where does someone learn to flooze like that anyway? Find out what @lordof1 and I thought in #RibbonOfMemes ribbonofmemes.org.uk/archive/2 #Podcast #Film #Movies

  3. After Knives Out and Glass Onion, does 2025's Wake Up Dead Man make three winners in a row? Find out what @lordof1 and I thought in #RibbonOfMemes ribbonofmemes.org.uk/archive/2 #Podcast #Film #Movies

  4. I just listened to #RibbonOfMemes do Waterworld.

Not the best episode because there's not much remarkable about that movie beyond its glaring implausibility.

Anyway, I have only seen the movie once or twice back in the 90s and I don't remember the plot, but I do remember quite a few details.

But one thing I don't remember is a sea monster! ? Apparently there's a sea monster.

  5. Is 1984's The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension a misunderstood classic, overrated, or something in between? Find out what @lordof1 and I thought in #RibbonOfMemes ribbonofmemes.org.uk/archive/2 #Podcast #Film #Movies

  6. Anyone listening to #WhartsonHall or #ImprovisedRadioTheatreWithDice or #RibbonOfMemes on #Spotify, since their "automatic systems" are now culling 20+ episodes a day for nonspecific music copyvio and I cannot be arsed to respond to each of them individually which is the only avenue open to me, I suggest you listen somewhere else. Via our own actual RSS feed, would be best.

  7. It's 1968. Can anyone save us as The Devil Rides Out? Well, Christopher Lee has a better chance than most. Find out what @lordof1 and I thought in #RibbonOfMemes ribbonofmemes.org.uk/archive/2 #Podcast #Film #Movies

  8. #RibbonOfMemes have gone and done #TheShining, which I will listen to.

It's a curious film. I'm not much of a fan of Kubrick, even though his films are clearly meticulously made. I rewatched the Shining about a year or so ago and ended up watching it again.

The presence of absent indigenous people is striking and also implied child abuse.

Probably Jack Nicholson's best performance who's an actor I don't rate much.

Storywise it just starts then comes to an end. It's more of insanity slowly possessing a man.

Anyway, I'll listen to what Memes has to say.

  9. #RibbonOfMemes has done a Waterworld podcast and I'm not sure how I feel about that.

  10. @lordof1 and I continue our #RibbonOfMemes trip through the 1950s apocalypse with World Without End, Panic in Year Zero and On the Beach. (One of these films is not from the 1950s, one is barely about the apocalypse, and one would be much better if it weren't pretending to be a film of the book.) ribbonofmemes.org.uk/archive/2 #Podcast #Film #Movies

  11. Surprisingly, 1984's The Ice Pirates isn't a Star Wars ripoff. It's much more a Sabatini ripoff. Find out what @lordof1 and I thought in #RibbonOfMemes ribbonofmemes.org.uk/archive/2 #Podcast #Film #Movie

re. Apocalypse Now being imperialism posing as anti-imperialism, Baudrillard wrote of Apocalypse Now as 'The Viet Nam war' ie. they are the same thing.

Essentially, going to someone else's country and blow it up to make a movie - for profit - is not entirely different as Western imperialism -- which is blowing other people's countries up for profit.

  13. Listening to #RibbonOfMemes do #ApocalyspeNow and they say that Willard is shown broken at the beginning but after doesn't show any of that.

But I think he does. It's more of a suppressed brokenness with occasional spontaneous bursts of violence.

And that's one of the reason the movie is so great. It holds a simmering tension throughout. And the main character is broken but everything else is much worse.

  14. Is 1993's The Nightmare Before Christmas really all that, or did it just hit at the right time in an era of blandness? Find out what @lordof1 and I thought in #RibbonOfMemes ribbonofmemes.org.uk/archive/2 #Podcast #Film #Movies

  15. I was wondering why #RibbonOfMemes hadn't done Apocalypse Now and that is because they had done Apocalypse Now.

I will listen to this one.

  16. #RibbonOfMemes have done a podcast on the "first talkie" The Jazz Singer.

I don't think I'll ever bother to watch that movie, but I will listen to their podcast!

  17. #RibbonOfMemes has done a Starman podcast and the movie has been on TV a few times recently and I've literally seen occasional glimpses of the beginning bit and a bit where he uses a marble to make an iron bar go red hot and set on fire.

I watched it properly a long time ago. But it is one I was curious to watch again.
