  1. Ein lesenswerter Artikel zum #reshoring der Produktion von Sharpie-Stiften in die USA.

  2. Nvidia’s Arizona chip move isn’t strategy it’s politics. Pressured by Trump’s tariffs and threats, Nvidia shifted production and invested $1B in Nokia to please Washington. The result? Lost China sales, symbolic reshoring, and government contracts to fill the gap.

  3. As Labor Day approaches, I'd like to acknowledge the work of the Reshoring Institute and its work to bring manufacturing production back to the United States.

During my lifetime, I've seen the birth and boom of the microcomputer industry, worked with and inside the factories that drove it, and watched Silicon Valley lose nearly all of its ability to produce the hardware upon which the information age is built.

  4. We've had #offshoring... then #reshoring (the return of functions previously offshored) & now we have 'friendshoring' - the location of #supplychain nodes in politically friendly countries (allies).

As firms try to shift supply chains (or at least diversify them) to minimise geopolitical #risk we can expect to see the reinforcement of economic blocs in parallel to alliance-formations.

Whether this will raise costs (as European Central Bank warns) & (re)stoke #inflation remains to be seen

  5. CW: Long thread/5

For example, if you're cheering the idea of "#reshoring" industries like semiconductors and solar, these economismists want you to know that you've been misled:

    Indeed, you're "doomed to fail":

Why? Because onshoring is "inefficient." Other countries, you see, have cheaper labor, weaker environmental controls, lower taxes, and the other necessities of "innovation," and so onshored goods will be more expensive and thus worse.
