  3. RetroChallenge announced the results of RC2024/10 and I'm honored to be among the winners. I entered with the WebCard project written in Interlisp, a NoteCards extension for visiting websites.

Thanks to the organizers, voters, and judges and congrats to all the entrants, especially @psychotimmy who won the Grand Prize.

  5. Are the RetroChallenge 2024 entries still supposed to get the final comments? I know they may come in August or September of the following year but the 2025 edition starts in slighly over a month and there are no final 2024 comments yet.

  7. The RetroChallenge announced the winners of the 2024 edition. Great choices, congrats all!

I had a lot of fun entering the challenge, my first one, with a Medley Interlisp project that extended NoteCards to visit websites:

  8. A quick #RetroChallenge update:
    2016-Me was a careless idiot
    2024-Me was a fool for trusting 2016-Me
    That is all.

  10. Getting closer to the end of #RetroChallenge #RC2024. I discovered an 8 year old footprint error. But, other than that, I think this ZX81 module *should* work in a suitably modified #RC2014.

Now I just need to make suitable modifications to an RC2014!

  12. I'm working on a WebCard demo notefile with examples of web links filed into various types of cards.

  13. WebCard is not a large system but I documented it anyway, explaining the few things it adds to or differs from NoteCards.

  14. A sneak peek at the bitmap I designed for WebCard cards of type Web, here open in the Medley Interlisp bitmap editor. The bitmap at the actual size is near the top left corner whereas the magnified view takes up most of the window.

The bitmap represents a card at the center of which is a globe with meridians and parallels.

  15. I'm considering the next steps to conclude the work on WebCard project for the RetroChallenge 2024.

  16. @socketwench I think updates to your project page will do. Well, they know about your code refactoring anyway, so I guess it was from there. I try to remember to post links to my blog on here when I make updates and include the #RetroChallenge or #RC2024 hashtags.

  18. Enjoyed reading the half-time updates on #RetroChallenge and seeing the progress some of you are making. Looking forward to the next couple of weeks of #RC2024

  20. Since I need to import a bitmap in Medley for WebCard I'm researching some image conversion tools.

  21. WebCard now does some basic housekeeping of visited URLs. This reduces web browser tab clutter and keeps unintentional link traversals under control.

  22. So, you want more #RetroChallenge #RC2024 updates? Ok, the RC2014 blog has some updates on the #ZX81 module schematics, and the #Portfolio and #Z88 serial connections to the #RC2014

And for those of you that use RSS, you can subscribe so you always have the latest updates

  24. I finally fixed a URL validation bug of WebCard, which turned out to be just a typo in a clause of an Interlisp iterative statement.

  25. WebCard cards of type Web are stand ins for WWW websites. So I changed the code to make the text of such cards read only and refactored the text updating code.

  26. Thanks Martin D. Sayers. Despite 94 of the 212 pages of RS232 Made Easy being dedicated to serial port pin assignments and 10 pages of cable diagrams, none of them specifically mention how to connect an Atari Portfolio to an #RC2014.

  27. Today I reviewed the WebCard code, researched NoteCards, and planned what to do next.

  28. For my RetroChallenge project I'm looking for a black and white line art icon of a globe similar to this. Any recommendations of such icons with a MIT compatible license?

  29. Not this year, because I’m not organised enough, but maybe I should make a VIC20 game for a future #RetroChallenge #rc2024 🤔 or for one of those MSX graphics chip boards for #RC2014 🤔 or finally build that Rosco68K kit I have 🤔 or fix that skip find Apple 2 🤔

  30. I'm tempted to sign up for #rc2024 with my FPGA graphics core, but even with the RC's very loose ruleset I'm not sure it makes sense... Is building a graphics chip with the features and feel of a vintage computer's graphics chip, for use on a homebrew retromachine that isn't replicating a computer that existed back in the day, reasonably in scope?

Eventually I want to drive it from a 65C816 CPU and doing Atari ST/Amiga-ish video things, but dunno how far I'll get during the next month...

  31. The RetroChallenge runs in October but some entrants are already doing stuff and posting updates. If one enters now is it already possible to work on the project? Asking for a friend.

  32. If you read the latest #RC2014 newsletter then you'll know that between September 27 and October 6 I will not be shipping any orders. Just thought I had better mention it here in case you're entering #RetroChallenge #RC2024 so you can plan ahead.

  33. I took part in my first Retro Challenge 10 years ago now, building a little Z80 based computer that I used the #RC2014 hashtag for. (See sowen.com/653/retro-challenge- for my original entry!).

Well, for the 10th anniversary, not only will there be a specific RC2014 section to enter, but I will be sponsoring a prize for #RC2024

Things kick off in 1 month, so you haven't got long to get your entry in. Sign up here retrochallenge.org/2024/08/rc2 and good luck!
