  2. Self-Titled Summer | Algiers (2015, US)

Next in our new Self-Titled Summer series is number 52 on The List, submitted by mbr. Here’s a quick rundown:

    • Point(s) of origin: Band members Franklin James Fisher, Ryan Mahan, and Lee Tesche grew up together in Atlanta, Georgia, officially forming Algiers in 2012. British drummer Matt Tong (formerly of Bloc Party) joined the band during the tour for this debut album. The band is named after the 1966 film The Battle of Algiers and its subject matter.
    • Tasting notes: Post-punk, experimental/gospel rock, psychedelic/dystopian soul, righteous fury
    • Standout track: Well, the first track “Remains” immediately gave me goosebumps and laid out what was in store for the rest of the album, so I’m going to go with that. “Irony. Utility. Pretext.” is also a banger. Oh, and all the other tracks, especially whenever Fisher is singing – his voice is absolutely riveting.
    • Where are they now?: Algiers is still going strong, and is a beloved protest band with a great stage presence. Mahan and Tesche also have another project together (along with visual artist Brad Feuerhelm) called Nun Gun that is well worth checking out, as is Tesche’s other projects, Lyonnais and Dead Pioneers.

    Happy listening!

  5. #OTD November 28, 1977

Parliament, released their sixth studio album, “Funkentelechy vs. the Placebo Syndrome”

    Damn they made it funky!

My aunt would play this album back in the day and man did it go over my head for the most part.

But this is the album that included their hit single “Flash Light”, which features a synthesizer bass line played on a Minimoog. It was impossible not to notice and enjoy this track.

It’s a concept album, which was not unusual for the group. George Clinton wanted to create a “funk opera”, and he delivers as usual.

The original album contained a poster of the character Sir Nose D'Voidoffunk, as well as an 8-page comic book that explains the concept behind the LP.
