Earlier this month I had the privilege of MCing the @team #protocolsforpublishers event in London, bringing together people from publishers and the open protocols that might help them secure their futures. I wrote up my experiences: https://werd.io/building-trust-in-the-open/

Something I found myself saying at the #AtProto meetup and at #ProtocolsForPublishers was that atproto/bluesky is at the 2010 Twitter point where people could see the potential and build on it. The growth of devs is what @[email protected] saw at the time.

I'm #StillInBrussels. I had planned to take an extra day for our first in-person meeting of the Social Web Working Group, but that fell through. As part of my trip to the UK for #protocolsforpublishers London, I added a day in Oxford, where I grew up. I haven't been back in so long. I'll be back later in the year, but still, the idea is making me so happy. Eight years is too long. When I first moved I told myself every six months.

I haven't been back to Edinburgh, where I went to university and lived for a decade, for *ten* years. I need to find my way back there, too. But I honestly don't know if I could handle it.

It’s always a pleasure hearing from @ivansigal.bsky.social, who brings deep experience and insight to the intersection of disintermediated global media and technology. He very smartly opened his talk into a true conversation with the room, leading by example. #protocolsforpublishers

And @ruperts.world gave a look at what might happen after the browser. It got my head spinning about how we might think about non-agentic, non-reactive use cases for new kinds of software - and the kinds of serendipity that publishers trade on. #protocolsforpublishers

Really enjoying the talks at the #protocolsforpublishers showcase at @betaworks.com. 🧵 @bmann.ca gave a great introduction to the publishers and technologists in the room.

@devingaffney.com demonstrated his work oh @graze.social, which lets people create custom ATproto feeds - and potentially monetize them. It’s an exciting glimpse of the future. #protocolsforpublishers

Something that’s not clear to me for AI-dominated computing futures: all the examples so far are either prompt-based or agentic. But publishers deal in a world of meandering discovery and passive learning; today we dip in and out of feeds. As yet there’s no analogy for that. #protocolsforpublishers

In a world where many publishers are still learning to listen using protocols that were established decades ago, I wonder if, in addition to new protocols that disintermediate publishers and their audiences, we need to build new publishers who will take advantage of them. #protocolsforpublishers
