  1. I registered for an event, seemingly organised by one of my favourite professors, who retired a few years ago. I was super excited to get to see him again.

Turns out he shares a name with the *actual* organiser of the event 😅

I'm sure that guy is nice, too. At least now I have an opportunity to find out 🤷‍♀️

  2. Campus was closed for Labor Day. I spent part of it cooking for about 300 people at the Northland Rescue Mission in Grand Forks.

A holiday moves a professor's work. It does not remove it.

  3. My colleague just asked me if I can bring my lock picking tools to the office on Wednesday and I feel like I should be worried, except that I have no reasonable right to be, since I am the one who has a set of lock picking tools at home...

  4. My student gave me a hug (with consent).

Excuse me while I sit in my office and try not to cry. 🥺 ❤️

  5. Left the office at 18:15, without any reading material for on the train. Please clap.

  6. Colourful flowers under Dutch skies on the campus today. I love seeing how different kinds of flowers take over from each other as winter turns into spring turns into summer.

Okay so I'm a total amateur.

One of our full professor just cycled by me, balancing his box of exams on the back of his regular bike. Didn't take pic because I was riding a bike myself, with my student behind me, and didn't want to set a bad example by taking my phone out and breaking the law, so y'all just have to take my word for it.

I guess now I know what I have to do to become full professor.

  8. CW: Vegan food pic

Not the most appetizing shot, but I want y'all to know that coconut rice pudding with mango, lime syrup and crushed pink peppercorns is very yummy.

(Context: we had our Easter potluck lunch at work today and I brought rice pudding with various toppings. Other toppings were lemon curd, passion fruit, banana, and powdered sugar. Had intended to also bring the caramelised bananas that I had made, but forgot.)

  9. Me: In the interest of time, I will convince you using a Proof by Intimidation only.

    Student: Sure!

    Me: *shows slide*

Student, nodding approvingly: That worked :)

  10. Thanks everyone for your well wishes!

Everybody was a sweetheart today, so even when I messed things up, things were still okay.

  11. @anna I always teach my students that when they make a list in their paper or presentation, all items on the list have to be in the same category, or of the same type. Might file this one in the “bad examples” folder 🤷‍♀️

  12. To those who are interested in the 1984 entries:

On page 633 they discuss the development of interior point methods, following the work of Narendra Karmarkar in 1984, page 810 contains the associated bibliography entry, and page 811 contains the bibliography entry for the English translation of Levin's paper on Universal Search Problems.

I don't know why 1984 is the only year with an index entry. I can only assume it's an Easter egg.

Wah it is Monday morning for sure!

Was lucky enough to make it to Delft train station, got my bike, raced to the office. When I arrived, it turns out that all the lifts were out of order, so I had to drag myself, my backpack, my big textbooks, and my sports bag up 5 flights of stairs.

After dropping off everything I didn't need, I wanted to leave my building so I could go to the building where my lecture was, only to find that the *door* was out of order.

Arriving at the lecture hall, I discovered that my Acrobat reader had died, so I had to uninstall and reinstall. That finally done, I had my slides up on the big screen and started my lecture, only for my laptop to crash when I tried to navigate to slide 2.

While it rebooted, I improvised the first part of my lecture without slides. The lecture hall was super cold, so I wanted to get tea, but the machine wasn't working...

After all the train and laptop problems I had on Friday, I can hardly blame Monday morning for this, but still 😳

At the end of the lecture a lot of questions from students that started with "Sorry, you probably covered this, but I missed the first part of the lectures because my train wasn't running..."

Students were cool, tho, so that was nice!

  14. Great. Took a 7:15 train to get to the office on time so I’d have some time to re-read my notes and set up my laptop etc before teaching a lecture at 8:45, but because of a “power failure” there are no trains between The Hague and Delft, so now I’m sardined into a delayed street, and will, in a best-case scenario, run sweatily into the lecture hall at 8:45 sharp 😩

At least there is a streetcar, I guess.

  15. My student walked into my office and stared at the open copies of Russell & Norvig and Kleinberg & Tardos on my desk, with a look of shock and horror on their face, and then went: Do you have time to read all of that‽

I mean... given the notes scribbled in the margins and the bookmarks sticking out of my books, I can hardly deny that I've read at least parts of them in quite some detail. If I admit that, however, my students are no longer going to buy the "sorry I don't have time for an extra meeting" line...

Anybody have a good comeback for me for the next time this happens? This time I just went with "er... that's kind of the idea of studying... that you read your textbooks..." 🤦‍♀️

  16. BREAKING: I am in my office! So much for my excuse to go home early. Might still do so if the painkillers don't kick in within the next hour.

  17. Me, last year: Let's not take all my notes with me. Let's just leave them at the office and try to have a proper Xmas break. Also, let's already put some clean, dry, professional clothes in your office, because January might be wet and you might be groggy on the first day and tired and not wanting to carry so much stuff.

Me, this morning: Oof, too much snow to ride my bike. I'll walk, instead. Good thing I don't have to carry all my notes and dry clothes, but have everything waiting for me in my office. Thank you, Anna-of-the-past.

The lock on my office door: hahahhahahhahaha you think I'm going to open for you? Nah.

  18. Just reviewed my students’ comments from last semester. It seems I assign too much reading. (NB: I teach upper division literature courses.) 🤦‍♂️ #academicchatter #academia #professorlife
