Got a rackmount server set up in our homelab. Right now it is primarily used as a Minecraft server for my sons and their friends.
The dual Xeon processors allow them to have some pretty impressive server side mods.
One of my sons did the setup of the Minecraft server in a ProxMox container. That way we can also easily use it for other things, too. ProxMox gives a lot of flexibility. Also great that it is based on Debian.

Guys, I'm a HP person, meaninh: working mostly with hardware from this co. Now I have an old #Dell #PowerEdge R350, in some other part of the world to administer. I have access to all network resources, passwords, ppl who might help for simple tasks on location, but no it expert.
I need a KVM on the host machine to install proxmox. I wandered through the mazes of Dell's websites and acvountsz but they couldn't help me to buy a license for the #idrac, that allows me to use KVM console. Is there a person who's able and willing to help me? Someone who knows how to get the license and how to install it?

A little server hardware fun for my fellow #InfoTech #Dell #PowerEdge admins.
Upgrading a Dell PowerEdge R940 from a Dual to Quad CPU configuration
-
This is the Dell PowerEdge, well, it's kinda "old" as the salesperson said.
It has like 2 TB of RAM, 2 AMD EPYC CPUs, tons of hotswappable SSD slots, SFP modules, and other cool shit.
This whole thing costs like 300k - 500k baht. (9k - 15k USD)
-
Got the motherboard replacement on my PowerEdge R415 installed. The biggest issue was getting the Sevice Tag transferred to the new board. If you are running Linux, this worked great. The package in the debian repos was smbios-utils.

Arrancar y listo. (1/3)

This is mostly for my own personal documentation use but I thought I'd share how awesome an old @Dell #PowerEdge #R710 server can be, even today when running @openSUSE #Tumbleweed as my server OS. There are good reason for using it too, more in the future on that.

Redid my #Proxmox cluster so there are now 3 nodes again! Two #Intel #MacBookPro devices and a #PowerEdge with #Debian #NFS backed storage. Gotta say, aside from the slower USB Ethernet (Proxmox and WiFi don't get along) the MacBooks are great hypervisors

Is the Dell Poweredge R720XD the Toyota Camry of the server/IT world?

Se viene mรกs mandanga. Me faltarรญan 4 (o 2 mรญnimo) caddies mรกs y ya estarรญamos.

@fennix I've got two #PowerEdge at home... #homelab

@HankB using the standard #Dell #PowerEdge embedded raid, H710 Mini and the failed disk was a RAID10
-
My #NFS might have commit death, but I'm not sure how yet... So far from the autopsy: Two physical disks in a #RAID10 virtual disk have failed. It seems they may be the same stripe but I'm unsure how to confirm. I've ordered two new disks to try and rebuild the raid but I think any of the non-archived data will be lost ๐ญ if I have to restore data from my archives, I may push mastodon to use a smaller disk for media instead of NFS.
Any #Dell #PowerEdge #Debian or relevant perspective welcome!!

So, here's my #homelab / #selfhosting #question:
I've set my sights on an eBay listing for a #Dell #PowerEdge R720 w/ 2x Xeon E5-2643's, 96 GB of PC3-10600R RAM, and 8x 3.5" HDD bays, all for just under $300. (Supposedly 3.5" bays, a bit confused on this point as their listing disagrees with the title โ I've messaged the seller for clarification.)
My hope is to just drop the TrueNAS drives from the original machine "as-is" into the server and hopefully at the worst have to do some boot repair.
Anyway, the actual questions are:
- I know next to nothing about actual server equipment โ is this plan rotten from the beginning?
- Is this server a decent "starting point" for a home lab that's graduating off consumer grade hardware?
- Will I need much of anything else in addition to the blade itself??

MMMmmm... Hello #fediverse! I am looking for a cable for a RAID Controller Card - H710 (PowerEdgeT740) That will split that SAS connection into 4 additional connectors for the drives. I have this one and I need another one. There is usually a DPN on them but this is all the labeling it has. If you know what I am talking about, please let me know where to find one!!!
