  1. They were totally unphased by my presence. I guess they feel safe up there on a wire.

  6. There is another post on the Possum TV blog. Sorry they are so few and far between.

Two new brushtails are introduced, and an industrious ringtail has decided to furnish two of the possum boxes with nesting material.

  7. Happy new year from Possum TV.
May it be better than the last one, which was a real horror show.

Hopefully I'll find time to post more on this site, but no guarantees.

  8. I have put another post on the Possum TV blog.

    blog.possum.tv/2024/10/update-

Also, as I write this, there are a total of 6 possums sleeping in the boxes. These possums will be in the boxes for another five hours. Check out the webcams at:

    possum.tv/box_overview.html

    Box 1 - unknown possum
    Box 3 - Laslo
Box 7 - Wink with her baby Grok
Box 8 - Blossom and her as yet unnamed baby.

  9. Oh hello possum mama and possum baby. Sorry my fruit trees have finished. Excuse my Chihuahuas for their Neighbourhood watch barking.

  10. This is Vindi (left) with her father Wasabi from 2013. Vindi's mother, who I think was Ruby, was not visiting the house at this point and the first time we saw Vindi was when Wasabi brought her over. Vindi did not return after this - some ringtails just prefer to keep their distance from humans.

  11. This is Tabasco from 2012. Although not particularly scared of humans, Tabasco never took food from hand and little is known about him, except that he may the son of Wasabi.

  12. This is Gumdrop (top left) with her baby Rosebud (bottom right) from 2010. If your can't see Gumdrop's head, your client is cropping the image, so be sure to view it full size for maximum cuteness.

  13. This is Red riding on Ruby's back from 2015. Ruby kept Red away from the house and we never got to see much of him/her.

  14. This is Omar from 2020. Omar sort of took over from Koji as the dominant male ringtail in the area, but he mostly kept away from the humans and we didn't see him that much.

Ringtails seem to be able to go a long time without drinking, but when they do drink, they drink like little camels.

Both ringtails and brushtails don't like very high temperatures, but from what I've heard, ringtails are particularly prone to heat stress and it's important to have a water source available during heat waves.

  15. This is Wasabi (left) with his son Niva (right). The photo was taken in 2017. Unlike brushtail possums, ringtail possum fathers frequently take care of their offspring, and Wasabi was a particularly good father. Looking closely you can see that his right eye has a blue patch in it and I believe he had little or no vision in this eye. This did not seem to affect him and he lived about twice as long as the average ringtail.

  16. This is Lychee from 2011.

I hope I'm not putting people off with sad stories, but Lychee is another possum who didn't make it. In 2012, Lychee and his or her mother Gumdrop were caught inside Box 2 by a carpet python called Grendel (like the one I posted a video of yesterday only bigger) and eaten. On a happier note, Wasabi, who was Lychee's twin, was not in the box at the time and survived. He became the dominant male in the area and went on to live perhaps twice as long as the average ringtail.

  17. This is Koru riding on Nikita's back from 2019. Koru is the Maori word for the spiral shape of an unfurling fern frond and this name was chosen because when first seen she had her tail curled in a similar shape. Her tail is not quite as curled in this photo but it gives an idea.

  18. This is Ruby (bottom left) with her children Koji (middle) and Keeta (top right). The photo was taken in 2016.

edit: This picture looks better full sized if your client letterboxes images.

  19. This is Gumdrop with two babies on her back from 2011. Looking back over my records, these babies don't appear to have been named. Ringtail mothers sometimes decide to keep certain of their babies away from the humans and this pair might have only been seen a couple of times.

  20. This is a photo of Gumnut, a ringtail possum, taken in 2010. In the spring time, possums - both ringtails and brushtails - particularly like to feast on newly emerged shoots, however these mostly appear on the thinnest of branches and possums often have to dangle and twist themselves into odd poses to get at them.

  21. This is Ghani from 2018. Most ringtail possums keep clear of humans, but some are fearless. Ghani was one of Zoë's children and was bold enough to enter the house by herself even when still very small.

  22. This is Chilli from 2011. Some possums are easier to photograph than others. Chilli was present in the area for four months and was seen often enough to be given a name but I only managed to get one single photo of him.
