  1. I just unboxed a factory sealed PNY GeForce 5200 PCI. It’s rare enough to find these cards functional today, but finding one that has never been touched by human hands since it left the factory is a different level of #RetroTech nerdery.

I'm looking at the original paperwork, the driver CD-ROM, and that iconic 2000s-era PCB.

  6. The SATA SSD of mine is from #PNY - never bought a thing from them, but never seen a reason not to. Anyway, I reached out to the local store I got the SSD from and they've been excellent so far - as expected, they just told me to send it back, and they'll see what they can do.

Haven't done that tho, I'll need to wait till tomorrow, tho I'm not even sure if my local courier spot would be open on a public holiday Saturday. PNY on the other fucking hand, I created a ticket on their support site - not even asking for RMA, rather just reporting them abt this weird experience I'm having with one of their drives and asking why it's not supported for firmware updates when my other 2 drives of the exact same model are supported...

and those bitches decided to close my ticket without saying any fuckin' thing. They've closed it 3 times now in the last 2 hours, and I kept reopening it back cos why the fuck not? Fucking cibais these lot. Then I saw this
#Reddit post that seems to echo the same piss poor after-sales experience they have with PNY, even with high value items like their #NVIDIA GPUs. Never again, honestly.

  7. I've 3 of the same SATA SSDs on my #RaspberryPi #OpenMediaVault #NAS. I monitor their temps from their #SMART report on #OMV.

Everything works correctly.. 'cept one of the disk, for some reason, I suspect is not reporting its temps accurately. For one, it reports itself being 40c - and I doubt that's true, from touch, but also from the fact that other drives are expectedly reporting fluctuating temps in high 40s to mid 50s degrees celcius, but that one drive remains at 40c all the time.

They're all the exact same model of drives, but only this one disk is presenting with this 'weird behaviour'. The only noteworthy thing is the two other drives are clearly from the same batch with consequential serial numbers, while this one isn't. This one drive also runs a different firmware than the other two - but the vendor (
#PNY) offers no means to update the firmware for THIS one drive, but theoretically possible for the other two (weird - but they provide a firmware updater tool based on the 3rd letter on the drive's SN).

All in all, does anyone know a possible fix for this, or should I RMA it eventho it's technically working perfectly fine otherwise?

  9. A little clip of our opening night "finale" after the MIT glass band played their horns. I bent "charms" for each of the class's instructors and got them done in half a day- in time for the opening night demo. 5 classes and neon red light with a high voltage animator- so naturally we went with a pentagram. A glassy high voltage pentagram of knowledge!

Also, the wifi is now "better" on campus thanks to some fiber ran into the woods. A few months ago I set up a Nextcloud server running at home that my photos back up to from my phone. I just realized that I can upload videos from Pilchuck to Mastodon straight from my home server! No need to clog the limited Pilchuck bandwidth
