#aircon carriages on the #Picadilly line are probably essential now, but will dump more heat into the tunnels, and thence the subsoil around them.

The first Tube trains were steam. Coal was burned outside the tunnels, and heat stored in the locomotive for the underground sections.

A reverse of that, with big blocks of ice, or tanks of frozen saline, carried on the trains into the tunnels, absorbing heat, and being regenerated once on the surface, could cool the trains without heating tunnels.

Oh, wow. The Piccadilly line in London will be closing for renovations later this year. Getting out of Heathrow will be unfun for a while (good thing there's the Elisabeth line now).
