    The first Tube trains were steam. Coal was burned outside the tunnels, and heat stored in the locomotive for the underground sections.

    A reverse of that, with big blocks of ice, or tanks of frozen saline, carried on the trains into the tunnels, absorbing heat, and being regenerated once on the surface, could cool the trains without heating tunnels.
