Note To The Closet Perfectionist: Give 37 Percent

I am a big baseball fan.

As a closet perfectionist working on being gentler with myself, an encouraging insight came to me while watching a recent baseball game.

30 percent or a .300 batting average is considered the mark of a premier player. In fact, Ty Cobb, one of the greatest baseball players ever, holds the record for the highest career batting average over his 24(!) seasons.

His stat? .366.

Pretty remarkable. It’s a baseball record that will probably never be broken.

But to put it another way, over Cobb’s lifetime he “only” hit the ball around 37 percent of the time. Which means he missed 63 percent!

In baseball, that is considered great.

So perhaps instead of subscribing to the mantra of giving “110 percent,” I should take a lesson from Cobb and baseball.

You see, while Cobb wasn’t much of a home run hitter, he is still #9 on the all-time list with 1944(!) RBIs (Runs Batted In).

So not only did Cobb hit the ball well, he brought a LOT of his teammates home to score as well.

In this crazy game of life, hopefully I can be half as good as Ty Cobb was in baseball.

Keep my eye on the ball.

Keep swinging even if I miss more than I hit.

Don’t get down on myself too much if I go down swinging.

Give it my 37 percent.
