  1. Most of Britain’s peat bogs could stop forming new peat as the climate changes.

By the 2080s, climate change will mean most of Britain’s peatlands could be too dry to form new peat. That’s the stark warning from a new academic study just published in the Journal of Applied Ecology.

  3. Walked with my sister and her kids up the College Valley in #Northumberland the other day. It was windy, with patchy sun and cloud, and the odd short shower blown in. My sister, who works in peat bog management, was impressed with the apparent bog restoration in places. Tree planting going on (with flourishing woods planted 30-odd years ago), free-ranging native cattle doing their thing, and sphagnum moss and bilberry growing thick.

  8. This gives perhaps a better idea of a lot of the terrain. Lots of peat bogs and groughs. But great to see the spring alpine flowers in abundance. Creeping azalea and Cloudberry.

  18. I read this 👇 article on Peat bog restoration last night.

I thought it was really interesting that there're more challenges to their restoration than just damning up the burns that drain the bog.

There's some lovely photography of the bog plants in there too.

  25. Today was spent out with the Bog Squad at East Rhodens moss. The plastic you see is one of the two dams we put in a ditch to re-wet the moss.

With less drainage, the sphagnum and other moisture loving plants will increase, the amount of bell heather decreases & tree saplings won't establish, improving habitat for a host of invertebrates - like the spectacular Emperor moth, the only member of the silk moth family that's native to the UK.
