"They also collected ovarian tissue samples from volunteers aged 30–40 whose ovaries were dysfunctional due to chemotherapy-induced premature ovarian insufficiency (POI), polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS), and ovarian endometriosis.
This revealed that some markers of ovarian aging – as well as conditions that may impact the reproductive function of the ovaries, such as chemotherapy-induced POI, PMOS, and ovarian endometriosis – are associated with an increase in the stiffness of the ovarian matrix."

Ah tiens, bonne nouvelle ! En espérant qu'avoir un nom enfin approprié pour désigner le problème aidera à ce qu'on reçoive moins de moues sceptiques en mode "mouuuais mais t'as pas l'air / mouuuais mais tout le monde a ça aujourd'hui 🙄". Ça supprimera au moins les "ah mais moi aussi j'ai plein de kystes" haha.
Mettre l'accent sur le problème endocrino - et donc non seulement sur les bails de fertilité mais aussi sur les risques de diabète et cardio, qui dans mon expérience sont... ben en fait la plus grosse partie de l'expérience à part les aménorrhées* ? - ça va être salvateur.

After 14 years of research and 22,000 survey responses, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) has officially been renamed polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS).
PMOS, a common hormonal and metabolic disorder affecting 170 million women worldwide, can lead to infertility, metabolic conditions such as type 2 diabetes, and mental health issues.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (#PCOS) was officially renamed Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (#PMOS) on May 12, 2026,. This change, published in The #Lancet and announced at the European Congress of Endocrinology, followed a rigorous 14-year global consensus process. The update aims to reduce stigma, improve diagnosis, and accurately reflect the condition's complex, multi-system nature beyond just the ovaries.
This is huge news for women, as it’s estimated that up to a third of women experience some PMOS symptoms. The previous nomenclature meant that many women were not being diagnosed correctly. As a matter of #bioethics of women’s treatment, this is a big sea change. As to how it changes medical professional’s approach, we will have to determine.

Like a bunch of other #intersex folks I'm open to renaming #PCOS since it is a misnomer, but it's incredible how hard physicians keep pushing for the new name to be gendered. I filled in a survey last summer from Monash University on proposed names like "female metabolic disorder" and it seemed like "metabolic reproductive syndrome" was one of the few gender-neutral options... but I did not realize this is how physicians have been using it... 🫠
