Ozma of Oz was released in 1907, thirteen years before R.U.R., the Czech play from whence we get the word robot in it's modern usage. Tiktok, though called a "mechanical man" is rather robotic.
Sure, he runs on 3 spring wound mechanisms but:
- he has a start up sequence
- he follows programming
- he can shut down (or wind down) -

p. 39; "One was quite full of square paper boxes, which grew in clusters on all the limbs, and upon the biggest and ripest boxes the word 'Lunch' could be read, in neat raised letters."
Given the post apocalyptic hellscape Dorothy and Bill have landed on, I image these magical lunch box trees as another form of bio engineering gone horribly wrong.

Dorothy and Uncle Henry are aboard a ship bound for Australia. Henry is in poor health and is going down there to visit cousins.
Ultimately the storm at sea is the excuse to get Dorothy on her way back to Oz. It amuses me though that she doesn't wash ashore at Oz (she can't because of the desert), given that she was on her way to Oz-tray-li-er.
