Had such a wonderful experience this past Sunday gifting a 1000 origami cranes to a super cool local health store called Sunseed Co-op. They’ve been in business since 1974 and are awesome. They were psyched to receive the cranes, and said they’d give them out free to customers. Today I received this sweet email from them. Made me smile huge and tear up a bit too.

This is the design of the paper I’m using to fold the next flight of 40 origami cranes. The yellow center of this cute succulent will appear on the top back of each crane. Have folded 920 cranes so far using various colorfully designed paper. Once 1000 cranes are created and gifted to my friend, I will have reached my goal of creating a Japanese senbazuru for them wishing them peace and happiness.

It’s been years since I’ve said it’s new ink day! I wanted to do this for my fiftieth, but due to complicated money feels (*ahem, shame!*) I haven’t done it.

I put paper cranes in a lot of my artwork to give my collage depth. They also represent peace and are a nod to my Zen practice days. Folding them again was an important rehabilitation milestone for my hand injury. The blue and green represents my wife and I, blue is her favorite color and green is mine.

Alis Volat Propriis is the motto of the state I live in. It’s Latin for, “She flies with her own wings”. The artist I’m working with has done a lot of work blending Japanese motifs with classic flash tattoos.
