  1. Open Source is About to Undergo Substantial Change

Open source communities are facing an existential crisis as AI and agentic systems reshape the landscape. With code generation tools flooding the market, traditional notions of value and collaboration are crumbling. If we fail to adapt our governance models, we risk empowering monopolistic forces that threaten the very essence of open source innovation.

  5. @mainframed767 I think the key point here is that the #OpenSourceDefinition formulation of "No Discrimination Against Fields of Endeavor" is fucking stupid, and hinges on callously naive liberal notions that restrictions must be bad, and can never exist to protect.

We've had plenty of evidence that the typical counter point of "people have to exercise individual responsibility" is no less fucked up.

The combination of both leaves responsible people with the bill for those acting irresponsibly.

  6. I've had concerns for a while about the direction the #OSI has been going with AI for a while. The publishing of the #OSAID weakens the #OpenSourceDefinition.

I'm not a member but the definition does require community participation in terms of the licences we choose and how we advocate for Open Source.

The recent board elections showed a disturbing pattern of obfuscation. We need to be able to trust Organisations that are meant to safeguard what Open source is.

  7. I've had concerns for a while about the direction the #OSI has been going with AI for a while. The publishing of the #OSAID weakens the #OpenSourceDefinition.

  11. Interesting thread about EDPB opinion on AI and building LLMs on folks posts.

I feel the @osi should have considered these things with their broken #OpenAI definition that undermines the #OpenSourceDefinition

But being in such a rush to define it, I suppose stuff like meaningful consent gets in the way of projects like #OpenAI goals.

I'm never going to forgive the OSI for doing that. There was time, it would have been better to insist the training models be open.

  12. CW: Long thread/23

And the source-code is licensed under a homebrewed license cooked up by Meta's lawyers, a license that only glancingly resembles anything from the #OpenSourceDefinition:

    opensource.org/osd/

Core to Big Tech companies' "open AI" offerings are tools, like Meta's #PyTorch and Google's #TensorFlow. These tools are indeed "open source," licensed under real OSS terms.

  13. Great write up by Stephen O'Grady: Why Open Source Matters.

Astute observation that most of the time those who want to change the definition, or argue it doesn't matter, come from companies behind single vendor projects and are likely the same folks who are trying to sell you something 👀
