The Main South Road bridge that has carried traffic around Old Noarlunga since 1973 carries the name of D.V. Fleming, South Australia's first Commissioner of Highways — a man who had already built one bridge over the same river, as a young engineer at Clarendon, fifty-two years before anyone thought to put his name on a second.

In 1840, the cost for purchasing land parcels in the newly established “Noorlunga” township was set at four shillings per foot.
Initially there was minimal activity observed at the horseshoe bend on the river, despite its strategic location. The choice of location was made was to utilise the river for transportation and connecting it to a future port. (Port Noarlunga)
