While we're talking about languages and their inventors, I would be remiss if I didn't bring up Sequoyah and the Cherokee syllabary.
Sequoyah was a Cherokee man who invented the syllabary in the early 1800s after learning about written language from Europeans, and decided to invent something similar for the Cherokee language. The invention took him 10 years to create and it borrowed or built upon symbols from Latin, Greek, Cyrillic, and even some symbols from his own culture.
Cherokee is one of the few indigenous North american languages with an alphabet. The Museum of the Cherokee People (in Cherokee NC) has an awesome exhibit talking about the language its creation. Growing up in Appalachia, it was a trip that I and many of my classmates ended up making several times while in school.
I really can't understate how uncommon this exact mix of conditions is. The syllabary has a chunk of Unicode set aside for it's implementation. So you can support an entire UI written in Cherokee. There are printing presses, magazines, and books all constructed around this language. If you go to Cherokee NC or many places in Oklahoma, the language is printed on road signs.
That said, The language is critically endangered. The estimation is that there are fewer than 5 fluent speakers under the age of 50, though there are more among the older generations. I'm no linguist, but I'd have to credit it's survival today to this tremendous effort to preserve and translate things written in Cherokee.
If you live in OK or NC and are looking for a new language to learn, might I suggest this utterly unique and important indigenous language that is being spoken and written RIGHT NOW in your neck of the woods.
