"The descendants of the fascists from the 'Stern,' 'Haganah,' 'Irgun,' and 'Palmach' gangs pursued the descendants of those displaced from the destroyed villages and towns in '48, who left their villages carrying whatever they could in their bundles of departure. Today, their descendants repeat the scene in the camps of Jenin, Tulkarm, and Nur Shams, and today in Qalandia, after being forced to evacuate their homes threatened by the fangs of bulldozers ready to devour them, under flimsy pretexts accusing the safe residents in their brick homes of practicing terrorism. This silence adopted by European countries regarding the terrorist practices of the occupation forces and settler gangs, who are reproducing the genocide crimes they committed in Gaza in the villages and camps of the West Bank, is terrifying and frightening. Urgent European action is required immediately to stop the bulldozers from destroying the camps."

"Jerusalem... The Battle of the Narrative We Must Not Lose

    (. . .)

The policy of imposing a fait accompli relies on gradualism; what was rejected yesterday becomes a subject of discussion today, and tomorrow it may turn into a reality that the world is asked to deal with as a normal matter. Here, the occupation fights its most important battle; not only on the ground, but on consciousness. It realizes that military control, no matter how extended, remains hostage to the balance of power, while changing the narrative is a long-term investment. Therefore, not only geography is targeted, but memory as well, and every change in the city becomes an attempt to rewrite its history in a way that serves the occupation's narrative, not the truth of Jerusalem. From this perspective, the targeting of Al-Aqsa Mosque cannot be viewed in isolation from the attacks on churches and the Christian presence in the city. Jerusalem, throughout its history, has not been a city of a single identity, but has formed a unique model of religious and cultural diversity."

  3. #historiography #Sparta #JimCrow #OccupiedPalestine #history

This video is of a couple academics, one with a Mohawk haircut, debating the historiography of whether Sparta was a horrible place or if it was even worse. The debate hinges on the reliability of ancient sources and of *their* sources. Aspiring journalists and historians could learn a thing or two by watching this. It's is historiography in a nutshell. What *is* a credible source, anyway?

But my biggest takeaway is the subtext. The society it portrays is more like America's Jim Crow South or Occupied Palestine today than it is like anywhere else in history. By the time they drill down on demography (47:43), the number of parallels is shocking, if not entirely surprising. There are only so many ways to suppress a population that outnumbers you. Terrorism tops the list.

"Hamas: Israeli mosque attacks in West Bank 'fascist crimes'

Hamas condemned on Sunday the burning of two mosques in the northern West Bank as 'fascist crimes,' calling the attacks a targeted assault by Israeli settlers with support of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

Senior Hamas leader Mahmoud Mardawi identified the damaged sites as the Al-Rahma Mosque in Qusra, south of Nablus, and a mosque in Kur, south of Tulkarem. 'The burning of these two mosques is a targeted fascist crime and a flagrant desecration of Islamic holy sites … silence in the face of these aggressions is not possible,' he stressed, urging Palestinians to defend religious sites and called on Arab and Islamic countries to hold perpetrators accountable.

Earlier in the day, Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas said the situation had gone beyond isolated violence, describing it as 'a systematic Israeli policy aimed at creating new realities on the ground.'"

"Israeli Soldiers Let a Four-Month-Old Die at a Gate They Refused to Open

Ahmad Marouf Zeid, a four-month-old Palestinian infant, died after Israeli occupation soldiers refused to allow him through the Deir Ammar gate west of Ramallah, despite his critical medical condition requiring urgent transfer for treatment.

The gate has been permanently closed for the past four months as part of the Israeli far-right government’s policy of collective punishment against Palestinians across the occupied West Bank.

Ahmad’s family brought him to the gate and pleaded with Israeli occupation soldiers to allow them through. An ambulance was waiting on the other side to transport him for emergency medical treatment. The soldiers refused not only to open the gate but also refused to simply transfer the infant to the waiting ambulance on the other side. Ahmad died as a result."

"‘All of Lebanon must burn’; Israeli Minister demands genocide in Lebanon

Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir has stated that 'all of Lebanon must burn' following an announcement by the Israeli military confirming the deaths of four soldiers in the country.

Ben Gvir released a statement emphasizing his stance on Israel’s national security and international relations. 'With all due respect to the Americans, Israel must make it clear to the entire world that the blood of our sons and the security of our citizens are not up for bargaining. All of Lebanon must burn,' the minister said.

He also referenced direct communications with the Israeli leadership regarding retaliatory measures. 'I told the prime minister, even in our private meetings: for every tear of an Israeli mother, a thousand Lebanese mothers must weep,' Ben Gvir stated.

The minister called for an escalation in military strategy, rejecting previous operational approaches."

"How Gaza Was Disappeared from the News

Another month passes, and Gaza is barely in the news: the inert, so-called Board of Peace is doing its job. You might have thought that job involved reconstruction so Gazans could use the water, roads, food markets, hospitals and schools that make life livable, but if so, you would have been mistaken. The Orwellian-named Board of Peace (or Board of Empire or Board of Genocide, whichever is most apt) was intended to blunt public opinion by disappearing Gaza, while the very long-term plan remains as garishly awful as ever: Donald Trump’s dreadful Gaza Riviera, which counts on the departure of the culturally conservative Palestinians and replacing them with strip clubs, gambling casinos, bars, resorts, high-rises and western tourists – a new playground for the rich and for the Israelis, towering over a silent necropolis below of dead Gazans.
Another reason that Israeli murders in Gaza have disappeared from the news is simple. The IDF murdered almost all the Palestinian journalists covering IDF atrocities in the enclave. Lastly, there was the Trump regime’s violent crackdown on free speech about Palestine on U.S. college campuses, beginning in the spring of 2024. That didn’t help either.

"Gaza flotilla activists faced police violence upon return to Spain. Israel: 'It’s hypocrisy'

A group of Spanish activists from the Gaza flotilla, expelled from Israel, clashed with police at Bilbao airport, resulting in beatings by officers and four arrests.

The arrival in Spain of a group of activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla was overshadowed on Saturday by tense scenes at Bilbao airport, where clashes broke out with the Ertzaintza, the autonomous police force for the Basque Country. The disturbances ended with four people being arrested on charges of serious disobedience, resisting authority and assaulting a police officer.

According to police sources, the incidents occurred as six members of the flotilla, who had just landed, were posing for the media and blocked one of the arrivals' exits at the airport. Officers then intervened, considering that the security cordon had been breached, which led to shoving and moments of high tension between activists, supporters and police.

Videos circulating on social media show serious clashes between police and members of the activist group. Some activists are seen pinned to the ground before being handcuffed.

The return of these activists had been delayed by a day because two of them were taken to the hospital, injured when they were intercepted by Israeli forces as they tried to reach the Gaza Strip with humanitarian aid."

"Seven flotilla activists detained in Israel arrive back in UK

Seven activists whose Gaza-bound aid flotilla was intercepted in international waters by Israeli forces have returned to the UK after being deported.

They were among more than 422 people
involved in the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), which aimed to break the maritime blockade of Gaza and deliver food and medical aid.

The group, who arrived at at London Stansted on Saturday via Turkey, told the BBC they witnessed people being 'systematically tortured and abused over two days' on Israeli vessels and in prison.

The Israeli military previously rejected similar allegations, telling the BBC that its orders 'require respectful and appropriate treatment of flotilla participants'.

More than 50 boats taking part in the GSF set sail from Turkey last Thursday carrying a token amount of aid.

Israel's government dismissed the action as a 'PR stunt' serving the Palestinian armed group Hamas, and ordered commandos to board the boats west of Cyprus on Monday and Tuesday.

The detained activists were transferred to Israeli vessels and taken to an Israeli prison after arriving at the port of Ashdod.

The flotilla's organisers alleged there were at least 15 cases of sexual assaults', while other people who were detained said they were beaten and mistreated.

The BBC has not been able to independently verify the allegations. Israel's prison service has dismissed them as false, saying all detainees were 'held in accordance with the law'.

Katy Davidson, 49, from Cornwall arrived in London in a grey tracksuit which she said she was made to wear after their belongings were thrown away.

She said: 'These marks are from the handcuffs. When I asked them to loosen them they said they didn't care. They didn't care about human rights, or whether I lost my hand.

'When I actually got my hands through to have them adjusted they actually tightened them and laughed.'"

"Israel accused of spying on Palestinian teachers who criticise Gaza war

A new investigation alleges Israel’s Education Ministry monitored and disciplined mainly Arab teachers over political speech and pro-Palestinian views.

Israel’s Education Ministry operated a secretive surveillance body that monitored teachers over political speech, with Palestinian educators emerging as the primary targets, an investigation by Israeli newspaper Haaretz alleges.

The report detailed the activities of an internal body known as the 'Incitement Committee', which allegedly gathered information on teachers’ social media activity, monitored political statements, and recommended disciplinary action against educators accused of criticising the government or expressing pro-Palestinian views.

The committee has investigated around 160 educators since the beginning of the judicial overhaul crisis in 2023, with roughly half of the cases deemed by officials to involve alleged incitement to violence or racism, the investigation states.

Most of those targeted were Arab teachers, though some Jewish educators who opposed the government or Israel’s war on Gaza were also investigated."

"How Ben-Gvir’s flotilla video shattered Israel’s multimillion ‘Hasbara’

The far-right Israeli minister’s taunting of abducted foreign activists triggers a global condemnation forcing Israel into damage control.

A video posted by Israel’s far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, in which he is seen taunting abducted flotilla activists who sought to break the siege on Gaza, has triggered a backlash and dealt a huge blow to Israel’s multimillion-dollar public relations campaign, known as 'Hasbara'.

The footage, posted on the social media platform X, showed Ben-Gvir gloating as activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla knelt on the floor, blindfolded, with their hands bound at the Port of Ashdod.

Israeli naval forces had intercepted the flotilla’s vessels in international waters off the coast of Cyprus, illegally abducting 430 participants. Among them, at least 87 have launched a hunger strike in solidarity with the more than 9,500 Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails.

The images of activists being dragged across the floor prompted several countries – including Italy, France, the Netherlands, Canada, and Spain – to summon Israeli ambassadors, condemning the 'unacceptable' treatment and violation of human dignity.

For decades, Israel has relied on 'Hasbara' – a Hebrew term translating to 'explanation' – a propaganda campaign to justify its policies and military actions against Palestinians to the international community.

Fathi Nimer, a Palestine policy fellow at Al-Shabaka: The Palestinian Policy Network, told Al Jazeera that Hasbara is essentially state propaganda designed to 'beautify the image of the occupation' by tailoring specific narratives to different global audiences.

'The fundamental assumption of Hasbara is that Israel is always right, but the world simply doesn’t understand,' Nimer said. He noted that due to Israel’s deepening isolation following its war on Gaza, the state’s Hasbara budget is projected to leap from roughly $15m in 2023 to an unprecedented $700m by 2026.

Yet, Ben-Gvir’s brazen video dismantled this heavily funded narrative in an instant."

"Colombia's Petro likens Israel's Ben-Gvir to 'true Nazi' over abuse

Colombia's Petro likens Israel's Ben-Gvir to 'true Nazi' over abuse

Colombian President Gustavo Petro on Wednesday sharply condemned Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir after videos emerged showing him mocking detained international aid activists intercepted aboard a Gaza-bound flotilla.

The diplomatic friction unfolded following the Israeli Navy's interception of the 'Global Sumud Flotilla,' a humanitarian convoy carrying roughly 430 international volunteers trying to breach the blockade of the Gaza Strip.

The video shared by Ben-Gvir showed bound and kneeling activists being processed at the port of Ashdod, drawing immediate global condemnation.

'State Minister Ben-Gvir is acting like a true Nazi,' Petro wrote on his account on the US social media company X. 'That’s how he treated our fellow citizens, simply because they wanted to stop the genocide in Gaza.'

In the video posted online, Ben-Gvir can be seen carrying and waving a large Israeli flag as he walks among hundreds of handcuffed activists forced to kneel with their heads touching the floor at a makeshift detention facility.

As the Israeli national anthem played in the background, the footage was captioned by the minister with the message: 'Welcome to Israel.' At one point in the clip, a restrained activist who shouted 'Free Palestine' was immediately pushed to the ground by security forces.

The high-profile detainees included citizens from over 45 countries, including several Colombian nationals, as well as high-profile figures such as the sister of Ireland’s president. Activists have reportedly launched a hunger strike, characterizing their detention in international waters as an illegal act of piracy."

"US imposes sanctions on Gaza flotilla organisers amid Israeli crackdown

Rights advocates say Trump administration is using sanctions and ‘terrorism label’ to silence Palestinian activism.

    (. . .)

The United States has imposed sanctions on four activists for their involvement in the flotillas trying to break Israel’s siege on Gaza, alleging without evidence that organisers of the vessels are trying to reach the Palestinian territory “in support of Hamas”.

The sanctions on Tuesday come as the Israeli military continues to intercept the latest fleet of Gaza-bound ships.

    (. . .)

Despite the truce, Israel has been regularly bombing Gaza, killing at least 880 people since the “ceasefire” came into effect. The enclave also remains almost entirely destroyed, and reconstruction has not meaningfully started, leaving hundreds of thousands of people living in tents.

The US sanctions on Tuesday targeted two representatives from the advocacy group Popular Conference for Palestinians Abroad (PCPA) and two others from the Palestinian prisoners solidarity network Samidoun."

"Several nations summon Israeli envoys as Ben-Gvir taunts flotilla activists

Global outrage after Ben-Gvir posts video taunting abducted flotilla activists as they knelt with their hands bound.

Several countries, including Italy, France, the Netherlands and Canada, have summoned the Israeli ambassadors to their capitals to express their 'indignation' over Israel’s treatment of the abducted Gaza flotilla activists.

The condemnation came on Wednesday, shortly after Israel’s far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir published a video on social media, in which he was seen taunting the activists as they knelt on the floor with their hands tied.

    (. . .)

US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee said Ben-Gvir 'betrayed dignity of his nation' by publishing footage showing human rights campaigners bound, abused and humiliated, but he did not specify he condemned the abuse or only the decision to publish the video.

    (. . .)

Israeli forces began overtaking the vessels in international waters off the coast of Cyprus on Monday, organisers said, where they raided boats, allegedly fired rubber bullets and abducted participants."

"Statement by the Palestine Coalition and Stand Up to Racism

The right to protest is a fundamental freedom

In the wake of the horrific antisemitic attack in Golders Green, politicians and the media have rushed to falsely characterise the marches for Palestine and to call for them to be suspended. These calls dangerously conflate Jewish people with the state of Israel and peaceful political protest with unconnected violent acts. We utterly reject both.

On Saturday 16 May we will march in London for the annual commemoration of the Nakba – the catastrophe inflicted on the Palestinians by Israel since 1948. We will march in opposition to the British government’s complicity in Israel’s well-documented ethnic cleansing, apartheid, and genocide.

This year, we will also march against Tommy Robinson and his far-right supporters mobilising on the same day. The organisers of the demonstration are fascists, racists, and Islamophobes who have espoused the antisemitic great replacement theory.

As always, our march will involve thousands of Jewish people – many of them proudly displaying their Jewish identity – as part of the Jewish Bloc, as organisers and platform speakers. By bringing together people from all backgrounds and walks of life, we will reaffirm opposition to all forms of racism including anti-Palestinian racism, antisemitic, and Islamophobia.

The right to protest is a fundamental democratic freedom that must be protected. We call on all those who believe in the universal principles of freedom, justice, and equality to join us at 12 noon on Exhibition Road on Saturday 16 May.
