Jul 7, 9:29 PM EDTAs of this evening the Oak Ridge Fire is up to 1,310 acres with 63% containment. Storms have started to develop off to the north and we expect showers and thunderstorms throughout the evening and overnight. In Divisions Alpha and Delta chipping work continued. The Division Kilo strategic firing operations were successful. Tomorrow, crews will verify that interior fuels in Division Kilo have burned sufficiently. Structure Protection worked on back-hauling protection assets from around houses and structures. Division Mike assisted with back-haul through the use of helispots.
-
Firefighters will continue to monitor hotspots within the fire perimeter including recently burned areas. When conditions warrant, the backhaul of equipment and rehabilitation of containment lines will proceed in Div. K. Over the rest of the fire, backhaul and rehabilitation are currently in progress.
MON is the last day that the public information boards in Westcliffe, Wetmore, San Isabel and Bishop Castle will be available. The board at the Beulah General Store will remain..

At the July 1 community meeting, the team had discussed an overall strategy that would have utilized strategic firing operations over a much larger area. Moderated weather and fuel conditions have thus far allowed fire managers to shrink the larger planned area that was presented using ground resources to build direct containment lines on the fire's edge. The fire is now anticipated to safely stay within a much smaller footprint. Additional strategic firing operations are not planned at this time unless conditions change.
-

Jul 7, 11:52 AMThe fire remains at 1,240 acres and is up to 59% containment. Overnight, crews worked to mop up the strategic firing operations area that had already been burned in Division Kilo. The Forest Service anticipates continued strategic firing operations today in Division Kilo to button up the line in the southeastern corner along the ridge. Chipping operations will also continue and in other Divisions, preparations for pulling excess gear and equipment off firelines will begin.
Expect to continue to see and smell smoke this morning and throughout today.

Jul 5, 7:58 PM EDTWith an anticipated smoke and "'glow" this evening from strategic firing operations occurring in Division Kilo, please do NOT be alarmed in thinking that the fire is uncontrolled or is a "raging" fire. At night the orange glow and smoke will be much easier to identify and look larger than it really is, especially compared to during the daytime as it pops against the dark, black night landscape.

Night operations are being maintained across the fire area except for Div. U. Firefighters patrol and monitor any fire activity overnight, to protect values at risk. Aerial resources continue to be used for monitoring the fire, utilizing water drops and moving sling loads of equipment.
-
Chipper work continued in Div. D on the line from North Fork towards Beulah. Div. K utilized infrared UAS flights and ground resources to find areas of heat and work out the plan for today. They tested the hose lay on the line down towards Soldier Park.
On the western half of the fire (Branch I), Div. M worked east and tied in with Div. K with a completed hose lay in the Potato Mountain area. Crews continued to prep the line near Silver Creek Trail in Div. U. On the northwest corner of the fire, Div. W., firefighters continued to work directly on the edge of the fire perimeter, seeking out and extinguishing areas of heat.
-
This operation would aid in containment in an area that has been difficult to access and allow firefighters to work in a more accessible area witha higher probability of success. This plan was carefully developed, evaluating appropriate firefighting tactics that best align the needed outcome with weather and fuel conditions. Expect to see additional smoke in the area with these operations as fuels burn out.
Yesterday, in Branch on Div. A, crews continued work on chipping the northern secondary line and began to remove potentially hazardous trees on the line going south towards the fire.

Jul 5, 11:45 AM EDTThis evening, strategic firing operations are anticipated to begin on the southeastern corner of the fire (Div. K). A plan has been developed to put in a fireline along a ridge that can be more easily accessed by crews. If implemented, this operation will begin by using drip torches to fire and widen an existing containment line. Later, aerial ignition from unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) may be used to burn fuels from the fireline to the main fire. A hoselay is also being assembled in this area to aid in securing this line.
-
In Division Whiskey, crews continued deeper into steep and rocky terrain looking for heat while managing egress. Contingency completed work in Pueblo Mountain Park and are moving south. Structure Protection has completed all planning and protection assets are tested and inspected daily.
UAS (Unmanned Aircraft System), more commonly known as drones, assisted with infrared and heat searches of the fire today. Helicopters supported ground crews with hotspots near lines as crews continued to hold and improve them.

INFO SEVERAL HOURS OLD. For catch up purposes.

Jul 4, 9:16 PM EDTWith the drier weather, warmer temperatures, and wind gusts between 20-25 mph, the fire grew slightly to 1,193 acres and remains at 25% containment. In terms of weather, nothing notable is anticipated overnight. In Divisions Alpha and Delta, chipping continued along existing dozer line to clean up debris created during fireline preparation. In Division Kilo, crews spent the day searching for hotspots and connecting a fireline with a hoselay between Divisions Kilo and Mike.
-
Adam Johnson, Reporter
Jul 4, 12:38 PM EDTThe acreage remained the same overnight at 1,191 with a new containment of 25%. As a reminder, they do expect it to begin to dry out today, so smoke and some fire activity will likely be more visible.

Jul 2, 10:19 PM EDTEvening Update: There was minimal rain today on the fire. It was insignificant, in terms of operations. We expect some sprinkles over the next few hours but with minimal impact.
Divisions Alpha and Union currently have the most amount of heat. Division Alpha completed dozer line and worked on prep. Additional primary line and a spike camp will be deployed tomorrow for access.
In Division Kilo, the line was checked by cold trailing and that is why containment has increased today. Additionally, ground personnel worked on other lines continuing to hold and improve existing lines.
